Interviews at sive.rs/i

2016-03-27

I’ve been the guest on 54 interview shows, most of them in the past year.

Now you can hear or read them all in one place: sive.rs/i

You might find them interesting because I put a lot of heart into them, getting personal in a way I don’t in my succinct blog posts or stage talks.

You might find them interesting because I put a lot of work into them, too. The host will email me some questions in advance and I’ll spend like six hours writing, thinking, writing, editing, and writing before we do the call and hit record. I try to go beyond the first answer that comes to mind, to get to the more surprising and useful answer.

If you like to listen, I made an easy MP3 download link for each one.

If you’d rather read, there’s a full transcription on each page.

There’s also a link to the original website where you can find out more about the interviewer, and follow their work.

Since websites come and go, but sive.rs will be alive longer than me, I figured I should start archiving all these interviews in one place.

So, sive.rs/i

I’m announcing this now because the one I posted yesterday is going to be my last interview for a long time. So now is the best time to go listen or read, if interested.

    Well, you read minds.
After listening to your last one AND just finishing reading your book last night, I thought that I wanted more interviews, possibly as podcasts, so I can listen to them when I drive. Ta-dah, like magic, you publish this.
Where did you learn to read minds? :)

Thanks Derek, especially for the transcriptions. I have grown tired of podcasts, but I enjoy what you have to say and look forward to reading it.
Have you ever read any Edward Abbey? I recently revisited some of his work after a long time.
    Enjoyed it both times.

What a resource! Thank you so much. You think deeply about many things and it is a joy to listen to and/or read thoughts.

    Thank you.

I am surprised to see only a few comments here on this. Normally there are a sea of comments. I usually find one which is similar to what I would have said. In this case there is not, so I will make my first comment.

Your site has became one of my favorite sites to read and learn from since discovering you through Tim Ferriss. I have been treating your recorded interviews like a podcast of sort, listening on my own schedule.

Thank you for all of the work you do in giving to others! You are the good friend people need.

Are you going back into maker hibernation?

I like this quote from the Ronnie Overgoor interview:

" a lot of people, their approach to their career is: they're gonna do something and hope that a fairy godmother comes along with her wand "

That's a great way to put it. I think artists have a tendency to mythologize "right place, right time" as this Greek God that they either thank or curse for their level of success.
    ☺ Thank you — Derek

Hell Yea! What a great idea. Read my mind with the bulk download too!

    Cheers

Derek, what a great collection of interviews. Thank you for taking the time to collect them and sharing!

I got hooked on your content and philosophy of life through the Tim Ferris interview you did - amazing, especially the second part! This resonates so much with me.

The TED talks didn't resonate too much with me - probably wrong format and too short for my taste.

With the James Altucher interview now, you made a (peaceful) killing! Hearing about the struggles with CDBaby when leaving and the personal challenges you went through was so humbling; I can relate to that very much: The stuff you don't shine with in public, the personal things, the vulnerabilities. As an entrepreneur and explorer I went through plenty of that myself. Chip Conley did a wonderful talk at Google about his struggles and how he overcame them: https://youtu.be/Rau3bPyrSfw
I had just written a review on the Tim Ferris Show on iTunes mentioning my lack of understanding for all the advertisements there. So when you mentioned it in the interview I had to smile ☺

Enjoy your time in New Zealand - I was fortunate to have the opportunity to explore the country for 3 months and also came through Nelson and Tapu Bay. What a wonderful place you've chosen! https://www.flickr.com/photos/velaia/albums/72157604483525657
There's a very nice family: David Konecny, Pania and their son Vincent that used to live in Tapu Bay when I visited there 2008 - you should definitely meet them if they're still in the area. David is into IT, so you'll have lots to talk about.

One question: Why is there no way to buy the ebook or audiobook directly through your website? I'm always looking for opportunities to get as much of the value of my money to the creator and not hand it over to some middleman ...

And one last thing: You know Andreas Wil Gerdes? Seems we're 2nd degree connections already. Hope to get the opportunity to meet you in person one day!

    Derek,

I've been plowing through episodes of the Tim Ferriss show over the past couple months, I've probably listened to 50 or 60 episodes now. No one episode was more enlightening to me than your interview. Not only did you clearly do your prep-work, I found your advice and nuggets of information more powerful than any other interview on the Tim Ferriss Show. I don't say that lightly and you stand out among a quite incredible collection of individuals. Thank you for taking the time to share yourself and your ideas with the world, we're all better off for it.

Best of luck as you dive deeper into your creative pursuits!

    Respectfully,

    Ethan

Thank you, Derek, for sharing your authentic creations, thoughts, and intentions with the rest of us, throughout the years. I anxiously anticipate whatever you're inspired to share next, regardless of format.

    Hi There Derek:

Just listened to your interview on the James Altucher podcast (there is an upside to insomnia).
I also heard you on Tim F's podcast several months ago and you really "spoke" to me. Love your philosophy on life; you come across as totally authentic; 100% who you are. I'm sure that if met you In person I would encounter the same person I heard on these podcasts.
All the best to you. Now I'm going to order your book!
    Patty

    Hi guys, Derek

Besides reading the transcripts, I also cut and pasted parts that spoke to me at this time, for current issues. Also I some I re-wrote In my own words and summarized.

This was not too much work because I only did one transcript at a time, and only copied what spoke to me.

Also? In a different font I wrote my replies, with real sentences being better than using point form, so that I had to truly think it through. (If you try both you may sense the difference)

Also easy because I miss those meaning-of-life conversations at university.

Your thoughts?
