美国能源情报署(Energy Information Administration)的数据显示，美国 2020 年生产的石油多于消费的石油，而 2021 年则是基本平衡。2022 年的油价飙升对美国经济的影响将会与过去截然不同。过去美国经济依赖于进口原油，油价飙升对经济有直接影响。在长达 15 年的页岩气革命之后，油价飙升对美国经济的影响将会更微妙。高燃料价格对消费者和能源密集型产业不利，但对美国的能源生产商及其工人有利。在 2010 年美国每天进口的原油比出口的多 940 万桶。2020 年这一数字变为每天出口比进口多 65 万桶。除此之外，美国进口的原油更多来自近邻而不是中东地区。2021 年前 10 个月，加拿大占美国原油进口的 51%，从波斯湾进口的石油只占 8%。而在 2008 年海湾国家提供了 30% 以上的原油进口。
