美国国家标准与技术研究院（NIST）的研究人员使用突破性技术揭示了先前未被认可的硅晶体属性，发现了标准模型之外的可能的第五种自然力的新信息。研究报告发表在《科学》期刊上。标准模型是目前广泛接受的粒子和力在最小尺度上相互作用的物理学理论，它是一种对自然界如何工作的不完整解释。它描述了三种基本力：电磁力、强力和弱力。每种力都通过“载体粒子”的作用工作，如电磁力的载体是光子。标准模型没有包含引力，此外有实验和理论猜测自然界可能还存在第五种力。研究人员认为，对中子电荷半径的最精确测量将能进一步约束或发现第五种力。
