Despite prevailing concerns about rising crime rates, preliminary data suggests that murder rates across the US declined by 13% in 2023, ABC News reports.

As 2023 draws to a close, the US is about to witness unprecedented crime figures based on preliminary data from law enforcement agencies.

The anticipated decrease would signify the nation's largest-ever drop in homicides.

This remarkable feat, expected to have resulted in over 2,000 fewer homicides this year, has challenged public perceptions, considering that more than three-quarters of Americans believe crime has increased in the past year.

Cities across the country are experiencing a significant reduction in homicides and other violent crimes.

This shift is attributed to enhanced crime prevention efforts, including collaboration with community volunteers, targeted initiatives to address gun possession in high-crime areas, and deploying officers on foot and bike patrols.

Jeff Asher, a national crime analyst, told ABC News that this year's decline was "historic" and the largest one-year drop on record, accounting for cities, suburbs, rural counties, and metropolitan areas.

An analysis of preliminary crime data from the 10 largest US cities reveals substantial year-over-year declines in homicides for 2023. The data shows an 11% drop in New York City, a 16% decrease in Los Angeles, and a 13% reduction in Chicago

New Orleans previously held the highest murder rate in 2022 but has experienced a 25% drop in homicides in 2023.

Cities are addressing ongoing violent crime concerns.

In San Antonio, Chief McManus plans to collaborate with public works and animal control services to address factors contributing to neighborhood crime.

Phoenix's interim Police Chief, Michael Sullivan, emphasized the importance of ongoing community engagement and recruitment of skilled officers as essential elements in the "recipe for success."
