German open-source vendor SUSE has released enhancements to its enterprise Linux distribution, with the focus being on security.

In a statement issued at its annual SUSECON conference, being held this week in Munich, the company said the new offerings included security-focused updates for Rancher, an enterprise Kubernetes management vendor Rancher Labs which it acquired in July 2020.

The latest version of SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 came with service pack 5 which improved capabilities to support high-performance computing capabilities needed for AI/ML workloads. These changes work in lockstep with Rancher, the most widely used Kubernetes implementation.

The changes support all features of confidential computing, a term for features that were facilitated by two technologies: AMD’s SEV-SNP and Intel’s TDX.

Every enterprise must maximize their business resilience to face increasingly sophisticated, and potentially devastating, digital attacks,” said Dr Thomas Di Giacomo, chief technology and product officer.

"That means they need to get serious about the security posture of their complex workloads, particularly AI/ML platforms where the protection of customer data is under intense scrutiny.

"SUSE’s approach to supply chain security along with the latest announcements allow customers to safely adapt the advantages of a cloud native world and to secure their digital business.”

SUSE's newly appointed general manager of Business-Critical Linux, Vojtěch Pavlík, outlined details about the changes to iTWire in March.

The company said customers would now be able to run fully encrypted virtual machines in all environments: AMD, Arm, IBM and Intel.

The changes announced on Tuesday also include additions for SAP infrastructure, such as automatic discovery and full observability of servers, cloud instances, SAP HANA databases, SAP S/4HANA, NetWeaver applications and clusters.

There is now support for 15 other Linux distributions inclusive of SUSE's own offerings, with the company making particular mention of RHEL 9 variations such as Rocky Linux, Alma Linux and RHEL 9. RHEL is produced by Red Hat, SUSE's much=bigger competitor in the business space.

Additionally, Rancher now supports security-focused product updates that include optimized storage, support for hardened VMs, and improved vulnerability and compliance management.

Rancher Prime’s AI Assistant, which will soon be available via the Rancher Prime customer Slack channel, is claimed to provide automated, accurate, and real-time assistance to customers.
