Watch: Newsreader Calls Crypto a Cairo-Currency

It’s 2023 and not only are people still unfamiliar with this space, but even newsreaders don’t know how to say crypto.

While covering a segment on governor Ron DeSantis signing a bill to prevent the issuing of central bank digital currencies, the ABC 7 news presenter said:

“President Joe Biden signed last year an executive order directing officials to examine the costs and benefits of cairo-currency, currencies rather.”

Whether she had a holiday to Egypt in mind while presenting the news is not clear, but that she was referring to crypto and didn’t know it was made clear because she did it again.

“Such a currency would be similar to… caaairooo… oh crypto-currencies, but it would include differences such as the value being fixed by the Federal Reserve.”

Hilarious, and an indication that crypto awareness still has some way to go, although to be fair to the presenter crypto is the newer term among bitcoin and eth, it arising around 2020.

This lack of awareness goes far beyond TV presenters. While Biden was signing that executive order in Washington DC, his aides were complaining to the media that they had no crypto expertise.

Nothing has changed since, except Biden and his team have opted for winging it. Like the TV presenter tried to do and half-successfully, although she’s at least funny.

Unlike the TV presenter however, their ignorance is bliss approach towards crypto has real costs for Americans who bear a government which to their face says they won’t innovate for you.

Or for Cairo.
