AI Eminem Cat Rap Video Removed By YouTube Due To Copyright Infringement

Grandayy, the creator of the AI-generated “Cat Rap” featuring Eminem, has received a copyright strike, and his popular YouTube video has been removed.

The Maltese YouTuber shared a tweet on Sunday, April 2, revealing a letter from YouTube that confirmed Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) had filed the copyright strike. UMPG had previously signed an exclusive administration agreement with Eminem in 2007.

In a tweet, he shared a screenshot of a strike message and wrote, “Universal Music Group just decided to copyright strike my AI Eminem Cat Rap video. Usually, they claim and monetize videos like this, but they really wanted AI Eminem to be taken down for some reason.”

Grandayy’s channel may face termination in the future due to the copyright strike. YouTube warned him that uploading copyrighted content without permission may lead to account termination.

The AI-generated “Cat Rap” featuring Slim Shady has received widespread attention since its release. It was even featured on an episode of HBO’s popular talk show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

During the show, Oliver included the video in a segment on artificial intelligence and explained how ChatGPT was prompted to “write an Eminem song about cats” to create the video. Oliver praised the video, describing it as “stellar.”

“Cat Rap” has a strong fanbase on Twitter, with many becoming instant fans of the song after hearing it on John Oliver’s show. “Okay, the AI Eminem cat song from Last Week Tonight is kind of a banger?” wrote one fan. Another praised it: “It’s beautiful: ChatGPT was asked to write Eminem-style lyrics about how he loves cats.”

The controversy surrounding the Eminem “Cat Rap” is just the latest in a string of AI-related incidents in hip hop. While some AI-generated content, such as the recreation of Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars, has been well-received, others have faced criticism.

On March 31, an AI-generated JAY-Z verse that has gone viral sparked concern from Young Guru, 9th Wonder, and DJ Clark Kent, with Guru calling for the government to intervene.

Hov’s esteemed engineer shared the digitally-generated vocals on his Instagram page on Friday, which sound almost indistinguishable from the Roc Nation mogul. That was enough for Guru to sound the alarm bells for where AI is heading.

“I’ve been trying to tell everyone this is where we are now with AI. For some reason, this one got everyone’s attention. So what do we do? On the one hand, I know you can’t stop technology. Once the genie is out of the box, you can’t put him back in,” Guru wrote on his Instagram page.
