In a Facebook post today, Mark Zuckerberg said the company plans to develop "AI personas" for Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. He also announced that the company is "creating a new top-level product group at Meta focused on generative AI." Engadget reports: It's currently investigating helpers for multiple media formats. You could see advanced chat features in Messenger and WhatsApp, or unique Instagram filters and ads. Video and "multi-modal" content could also benefit, Zuckerberg says. In the near future, you'll see an emphasis on tools for creation and expression. The social media giant is also pooling its generative AI teams into a single group to help "turbocharge" efforts in the emerging field, the executive adds. He doesn't provide more details, and cautions that there's a "lot of foundational work to do" before the most advanced projects come to fruition.
  • They want to add chatbots. Bots that will most likely try to sell you shit. Probably NFTs.

The details they're trying to hash out? Most likely how to spin it as not just another user-hostile feature that nobody asked for.

  • Here is this story about "AI" being used for personas, and here is an article [marketwatch.com] at the same time about the FTC warning tech companies about making unsubstantiated hype claims.

Michael Atleson, an attorney with the FTC’s division of advertising practices, wrote in a blog post that “some products with AI claims might not even work as advertised in the first place,” adding that “for FTC enforcement purposes — false or unsubstantiated claims about a product’s efficacy are our br

    • Re:

So you're saying, like other Meta projects, this one doesn't have legs.

  • AI bots to text on WhatsApp. AI bots to generate images on Instagram. AI bots to be personas in the Metaverse, because no one else is there.

    That sounds like:

    A) Spam texts from WhatsApp

    B) competition for any influencer on Instagram thus reducing their revenue and by extension the value of Instagram at all

    C) still no reason to join the Metaverse

    Sounds like a plan.

  • Of course Zucks is going to start jamming this tech into his various platforms, it's right up his alley of building souless, humanity-crushing crap. It's a great benchmark of where we are as a society that it's this guy in particular driving the direction of our cultural evolution. In a sane world there is no way we would intentionally put someone like Zuckerberg in charge of making these kinds of decisions that will profoundly impact literally billions of people. We're broken. This sucks. Sad face.

  • "Hi, my name is Jerry. I'll be your AI assistant for..."

I've been hearing this more and more places. I don't know what it's supposed to do for me as a user/visitor/client, but it's not doing whatever they think it is.

It doesn't make me feel better that I'm talking to a robot.
It doesn't hide the fact that your company is too cheap to hire humans.
It doesn't assist me in any way. If anything, the role-playing slows everything down.

It feels, frankly, condescending. It gives people uncanny valley vibes. Please s

  • So the artificial Metaverse will be populated by artificial inhabitants.

It's gonna be like buying two chess computers so they can play a game while you go to the movies.
