Setup my new 14 inch Macbook Pro (M1 Pro) fours days ago (on Friday evening). Put the computer to sleep with 83% battery life. Went to use the computer today and the battery was dead.

The only way to get the computer to turn on was to plug in the charger and let it sit for a few minutes. Upon booting, the battery capacity was at 12%.

I am not sure why the battery drained so fast while in sleep mode.

I am attaching a screenshot of the battery graph after I booted but it does not really show anything useful.

Has anyone else had this battery drain problem when letting their new Macbook Pro 14 inch sit in sleep mode for 4 or more days?

check back after another 2 -3 days...
So , recharge your mac at 100% Friday, and let it sleep over the weekend and see if still just 4 days

No external monitors or any other devices were plugged in (no mouse, etc.).

When you first set it up its going to be running a lot of background processes for at least the first day or so that is going to eat into your battery. I'd fully charge it, then let it sit again and you should see minimal battery drain. I have the 16" and the first 24 hours I didn't charge it and the battery drained quite a bit while sleeping. Now when I put it to sleep it barely drains a single percent while asleep overnight.

Before sleeping. Check on Activity Monitor, on the Energy tab. Sort by the prevent sleeping. See if there are apps that are preventing sleep

If the computer is put to sleep, it will still use some energy... so I don't understand, why you are wondering, that the battery is drained?

For longer battery life, if you don't use your laptop, you have only one option: turn off your computer. And even in that case the energy won't last forever...

I am writing this in case the laptop is not connected to electricity, so working just off the battery.

Kind of same issue here, loosing a lot of power "sleeping" falling from 53% last night to around 40%

The battery came without charge when I opened the box, but connected the charger and it powered on. However, I've powered off and never turned on again. It's completely dead with less than 24 hours since the purchase. I'll call Apple Care tomorrow and hope they provide me a solution to get a new computer as soon as possible.

Terrible experience with a $3k computer...

That’s a very odd instance, the laptop should have enough battery charge to turn on as soon as the lid is opened without the charger connected at all. Not like being off until it arrives would discharge the laptop totally. Tell us what Apple does for you.

This is a bad sign from the start. The battery is prob a dud. It's like that for all electronic devices. They should usually leave it charged at about 50% when shipping. If it's completely dead on arrival it could be a bad battery or just an old stock or it could have been turned on while shipping.

It looks like on your case it's a dud. Needs to be exchanged

I just opened mine after 3 days or so. Battery was at 96%. Something must be wrong with yours

I left mine for 8 days while on vacation.. I dont remember where I left it, maybe 50 or 60? But it woke up at 43%

Same issue. Went to sleep at 12am at 60% battery. Not connected to anything. When I woke up, it was completely dead. Had to charge from 1%. None of my previous macbook ever did this.

If you're not going to be using it for several days, why not just shut it down?

I gave it a proper restart. Went to bed at 68%, woke up at 66%. Working as expected now. Could be some software issues that prevent it from sleeping

Obviously not sleeping. I would wipe it, and do a test to see if it still has issues. If it does then return it for a new one. If it doesn't have issues then you had some process keeping it awake. You'll have to restore and see if the same thing happens. If it does then do some investigative work to see what is causing it to not go into sleep mode.

I am also facing a similar issue with my new M1-Pro device. Following that video, I ran the following command in the Terminal: Seems like the following processes are waking up the system almost any 10-20 seconds and preventing the sleep: So considering those results, it appears that turning off the bluetooth and disabling some of the sync functions might solve the problem. I will try this tonight and update my reply.
(it might be worth to mention that the new Magic Keyboard with touch-ID was connected to my Mac via Bluetooth)

UPDATE (Dec. 6th, 2021)
For my case, that didn't help much and the battery was still draining (even after multiple restarts).
So I went with a slightly more radical solution and erased the Mac, and then installed a fresh copy of macOS Monterey from a bootable drive.
Now, while being much more thoughtful of each individual software that I want to install, the battery is performing much better.
Especially, I am more careful when installing any Intel apps that are not optimized for the M1.
I have the impression that this was not the case with the older 2020 M1 MacBook Pro, and hope Apple fixes it soon!

UPDATE (Dec. 7th, 2021)
Seems like the issue with battery draining during sleep is fixed. I tried it on 100% and left it for 8 hours. The battery remained 100%.

Go to System Preferences / Battery / Battery tab and check if “Enable Power Nap while on battery power” is on. With this feature on, Mac never goes into deep sleep (hibernate) and periodically checks emails/performs iCloud syncs, so it will drain you battery over a few days.

tried pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests"

for me it was Time Machine waking up every 5 mins to try to back up to network drive that has been offline for few weeks... ??‍♂️ give up time machine!

Thanks for the answer, but that option seems to be missing on M1-Pro 14" Mac (It is available on my Intel Mac though)!

For what it's worth, I have noticed the same behaviour on my 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro – lid closed for 18 hours and battery moved from about 90% to 40% (the section in the screenshot prior to the screen being on... I'd closed the lid at about 12 noon the prior day): I've run the following command to get a peek at what might be keeping my Mac awake when the lid is closed (and is not connected to any external monitors):

I've had this computer for about a week, and the resulting file was 2.4 MB in size! Wow.

Browsing the file, most of the requests were like this:

Reading this thread at Reddit seems to suggest the issue is with Screen Time sending usage details to iCloud to generate the weekly screen time report.

Curious, I then ran this command to see how many wake requests were coming from Screen Time alone:

cat wake-requests.txt | grep "Weekly Usage Report" > screen-time.txt

The resulting file was 2.2 MB! So about 92% of all wake requests on my computer are connected to Screen Time! A feature I don't particularly care about. So, I've turned that off: I'll report back in a week or so... but hopefully this resolves the issue.

If this "fixes" the battery drain while sleeping issue, it'll a great workaround, but this still feels like a bug in the Screen Time implementation. I mean... the lid is closed! No monitors connected! Why does Screen Time need to be so chatty while the machine is asleep? 🧐
