Web Developer Job Outlook & Median Annual Salary

Companies in every industry rely on web developers to build and maintain their web presence, and with a projected 13,400 open roles annually, the job outlook for skilled coders is promising. Nationally, the employment of web developers is expected to grow much faster than the average for other occupations, at a growth rate of 8% between 2019 and 2029, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While educational requirements will vary among companies and roles, individuals in the Austin, TX, workforce tend to earn a median salary of $75,060 with no prior professional experience, with the highest earners averaging $127,700 each year. Those interested in applying for a technical role or promotion within their current organization should consider earning credentials to showcase their programming skills and stand out to employers.

What Skills Do Companies Look for in Junior Web Developers?

While specific tools and technology stacks can vary by role and company, there are a handful of programming languages that all junior web developers are expected to use on the job. As the most sought-out language by hiring managers, JavaScript is a must in any developer’s toolkit, followed closely by HTML and CSS. Employers are also drawn to developers with experience in database management, so having a basic knowledge of languages like SQL and NoSQL can help you stand out during your job search. The Coding Boot Camp at UT Austin curriculum covers a full stack of coding languages, starting with a foundation of the fundamentals of web development: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Students learn both front and back end programming languages in addition to the technical skills needed to work with servers, databases, and other back end technologies to qualify for a variety of positions.

What Can You Expect From the First Day on the Job as a Web Developer?

A web developer’s first days — and sometimes months — are often spent learning. Teams typically allow a junior developer to download and set up the organization’s codebase and databases on their own, and most individuals can expect the onboarding process to take a few days to complete. On agile development teams, the morning starts with a stand-up, a brief meeting to update the team before getting started on that day’s work. New team members likely won’t have any updates as they get settled, but are usually expected to attend stand-up meetings to get a comprehensive understanding of how the team works and any projects they’re involved in. The Coding Boot Camp at UT Austin provides students with many opportunities to collaborate with peers on projects that emulate real-world scenarios, giving a comprehensive learning experience and insight into day in the life of a professional developer.

The Market for Web Developers in Austin, TX

Austin, TX, is one of the nation’s chief innovation hubs across a variety of industries, as well as one of the more affordable cities in America. While salaries can vary greatly based on experience, background, and company size, the average base salary for web developers in the area is $75,917, and more experienced programmers can expect to command upwards of $96,000 annually. According to Indeed, the top companies hiring web developers in Austin include leading organizations like The CSI Companies, Wells Fargo, eBay, and Boeing, reporting salaries ranging from $138,407 to $158,303 annually.
