What Is Twitter Circle and How Does It Work?

Twitter has introduced a feature called Circle. But what does this feature do and how can you use it?

From early May 2022 Twitter started testing its new feature—Twitter Circle. Starting as a limited experiment, it has expanded to more users.

The feature offers a way to make your tweets reach a more exclusive audience.

In this article, we look at some features of Twitter Circle and explain how to access it.

What Is Twitter Circle?

Twitter Circle lets you choose up to 150 users to add to a private Twitter Circle group. Within this Circle, only added users can view and reply to your tweets.

At launch, the ability to create a Circle is limited to a certain number of people globally. But anyone on Twitter who is invited to a Twitter Circle can still interact with that Circle.

While Twitter Communities allow you to connect with new people, share your thoughts, and get involved in the discussions you care about; Twitter Circle is for sharing personal tweets with a select few people.

It works similarly to the way you can share a story with only close friends on Instagram.

How Twitter Circle Works

You can only create one Twitter Circle with up to 150 people. Whenever you post a tweet, you can select the audience you would like to share it with. The options provided are Everyone or Twitter Circle.

Anyone who has access to your Twitter Circle is allowed to like and comment on your tweet, but the option to retweet your post won't be available to them. Keep in mind though that they can still take screenshots or photos of your tweet, so don't post something that will get you banned from Twitter.

How Do You Access Twitter Circle?

If you want to create your own Twitter Circle, we've added some steps that will take you through the process.

1. Log into your Twitter account.
2. On the top of your home screen, you will find the dialog box where you type your Tweets. Click on this.
3. If you have access to the feature, a pop-up will appear and you can Get started using the feature. Another pop-up will explain How Twitter Circle Works. Read through this and click Got it.
   
4. You will then be taken to a pop-up that asks you to edit your Twitter Circle.
   
5. Twitter recommends people to you from your current followers. This is where you add who will be in your Twitter Circle.
   
6. Once you have created your Circle, simply type out your tweet and choose to send it to the Twitter Circle.
   

Twitter Circle has a very easy Edit option, which can be found on the audience selection options. Clicking the Everyone drop-down will then show you the option to choose between tweeting to everyone or only your Twitter Circle. Next to the amount of people in your circle you will see the Edit option. Clicking on this will let you add or remove users from the circle.

It's important to note that while Twitter Circle is still being rolled out, not all users will have access to this feature.

Can You Leave a Twitter Circle?

Twitter gives you three different options when it comes to leaving a Twitter Circle—unfollow, block, and mute.

If you opt to unfollow someone it will remove you from their Twitter Circle, although they can still re-add you back to the Circle even if you don't follow them again.

Choosing to block someone in Twitter Circle means you are both removed from their Circle, and also won't be able to see any content they post on their feed.

Lastly, if neither of the above options appeal to you, you can mute another user without blocking or unfollowing them. Twitter lets you choose between muting either the author or the conversation.

Twitter Circle Could Change Twitter for the Better

A Twitter Circle offers the benefits of limiting the reach of your posts so that you can target different audiences for personal and professional use. Anyone who uses their account for more than one main purpose can now easily send topic-specific tweets to select people in their group.

The only downsides are the limitation of access to the feature and the ability to create only one Circle. But as the feature expands, we'll likely see more changes.
