全球主要行业排名前三的企业营收在 25 年里增至 2.7 倍，但与此同时它们的研发投入则在大幅减少，垄断的加强正在阻碍技术创新。国际货币基金组织(IMF)的报告警告，“如果领先企业通过并购加强优势地位，其他竞争企业将丧失竞争意愿，导致研究开发被抑制。” 按每 5 年统计世界上市企业的研发费用，比较其增幅，2010 年代以后放缓明显。与 2000 年代相比减少一半。
