新冠病毒出现了多种变种，英国的变种传播速度更快，而南非的变种能部分躲避疫苗产生的抗体，迫使疫苗制造商 Moderna 和辉瑞调整现有疫苗以维持其有效性。现在，部分科学家又开始担心来自巴西的变种 P.1——他们认为这是至今最具有危险性的变种。新变种于去年 12 月开始在巴西 Manaus 市出现，到 1 月中旬，疫情再次在这个有 200 万人口的城市大规模爆发。英国变种花了 3 个月时间成为英国流行的变种，而 Manaus 市已经爆发过疫情，当地大部分人应该已经有了抗体，具有了群体免疫力，但在短短一个月时间里，P.1 迅速流传开来。流行病学家暂时还不知道确切原因。他们猜测 P.1 携带的一系列突变增加了其逃避抗体或抗体识别的可能性。制药商可能需要再次调整疫苗。
