Tezos, a decentralized blockchain network supporting smart contracts and dApps, is gearing up to rival “faster” networks following plans to speed up its layer-1 block time.

Nomadic Labs and Trilitech, the development companies focusing on building new ideas and innovations in the Tezos ecosystem, have proposed a 5-second reduction for Tezos block generation on Friday.

This move aims to improve user experience on the network by speeding up verifications on incoming transactions, thereby reducing the time they will be added to the chain from the usual 15 seconds to 10 seconds.

A Compromise to Tezos’ Integrity

While this development poses new changes to the performance of the Tezos blockchain, the team revealed that they had conducted thorough analysis and testing to avoid jeopardizing its integrity.

Notably, the team emphasized that this decision to boost the network’s block frequency will increase the blockchain’s speed and improve its reliability and security. Shorter block times contribute to faster finality, thereby reducing the window for potential malicious activities such as double-spending.

To ensure Tezos’ ability to finalize transactions within 10 seconds, the team conducted a series of tests involving high network loads, delays in transaction signing, and unstable network conditions. The results demonstrated that a block time as low as 8 seconds was feasible; hence, they chose 10 seconds to provide an extra safety measure.

Tezos Versus Solana in Finality Speed

The Solana network has suffered several outages, suggesting that its finality speed needs to improve to accommodate its high transaction speed.

Nonetheless, the network is still far from competing with Tezos, as it operates 400 millisecond block times, while Tezos’ potential block time is 10 seconds.
