Telstra warns public to be more vigilant against holiday scams Featured
Australian telecommunications provider Telstra has warned consumers to be vigilant as cyber scammers are on the hunt to exploit more victims this coming peak shopping Christmas season.
Telstra claimed it blocked on average 66% more SMS scams in November and December 2022 compared to the preceding three months, showing how scammers are more ruthless during the holidays.
According to Scamwatch, Aussies have already lost more than $7 million this year due to online shopping scams (January to November 2023).
Telstra acknowledged while its Cleaner Pipes Program helps to fight scams, some still get through.
Telstra cybersecurity expert Darren Pauli warns that scammers are more aggressive this season. This is what he observed and gave the following advice:
1. Beware of dodgy QR codes. Telstra saw a spike in email scams using QR codes that link to fake websites.
2. Avoid fake emails/SMS/websites: Fake emails and SMS’ sent by scammers are getting more sophisticated – from using AI to correct spelling mistakes and poor grammar to using familiar logos or brand cues to lure you in.
Last-minute Christmas shopping offers the perfect opportunity for scammers to slip in a dodgy email linking through to a fake website.
3. Ignore impersonation scams: Scammers will target Aussies pretending to be a reputable courier company or retailer offering fake discounts, claiming a product hasn’t been paid for or that a membership needs renewing with a sense of urgency to take action immediately.
4. Pay attention to payment methods: Paying for items over the internet by direct deposit can be risky as there is (generally) much less purchase protection compared to other payment methods like credit card or payment platforms such as PayPal.
