Virgin Media O2 Business has claimed it is the first telco in the UK to offer a portable 5G standalone (SA) private network.

The 5G SA, claimed Virgin Media, can connect companies to 5G at the flick of a switch—without the time and expense of building an entire network.

Since the first trials of the portable solution, Virgin Media O2 Business has developed and deployed two 5G SA PN platforms.

Telefónica’s innovation arm, Wayra – home to the first trial of this product – has been using the network since last summer.

Start-ups based in Wayra’s London office have already benefited from the solution, including Mobilus Labs, an organisation using advanced voice technology to enable industrial teams to communicate in environments with extreme noise (85 dB+).

To ensure safe interactions between people and devices on sites like construction, manufacturing and healthcare locations, Mobilus Labs requires connections which private 5G networks can provide.

Further trials with companies offering products ranging from virtual reality (VR) applications to Internet of Things (IoT) services have already shown high reliability, enhanced data security, and ultra-low latency.

These applications and features are leveraged using Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) and Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE), which allows organisations like Mobilus Labs to safely support mission-critical applications.

This integration makes Virgin Media O2 Business the UK’s first telco to incorporate MXIE into its private wireless offering.

“The portable 5G standalone private network will unlock access to super-fast Internet connectivity across Industrial sites. Having trialled Virgin Media O2 Business’s solution, we believe it will enable mobiTALK, our Push-To-Talk smart phone application, to offer a seamless customer experience,” said Mobilus Labs chief technology officer Tony Blackburn.

“From startups to large enterprises, our latest network solution will enable 5G trials and deployment without the time or cost of building a whole network. Removing barriers, like location and cost, to ensure that businesses get the connection they need,” said Virgin Media O2 Business managing director Jo Bertram.

“Reliable, fast, precise, on-demand connectivity is a must for all businesses, especially those in the most challenging environments like hospitals and construction sites etc. This plug-and-play private network unlocks reliable and low-cost connectivity for those industries whenever and wherever they need it, which is game-changing,” said Wayra UK managing director Bruno Moraes.

  • Optus, TPG Telecom, One NZ deploy Nokia’s antennas

Optus and TPG Telecom in Australia and One NZ in New Zealand have deployed Finnish telecommunications vendor Nokia’s modular Interleaved Passive Active Antenna to accelerate 5G deployment in the Oceania region.

Optus has already started rolling out an 8T8R variant of Nokia’s IPAA, while TPG Telecom and One NZ plan to commence deployments later this year.

Nokia said service providers face the challenge of finding additional space on towers and rooftops to add 5G antennas.

Developed with CommScope, the IPAA+ addresses this issue. Its modular design supports a wide range of frequencies, from 700MHz to 2.6GHz and the 3.5GHz 5G band with a compact antenna solution.

Nokia has also created an Optus-specific variant that incorporates a 2.3GHz 8T8R array easing the deployment of both 2300 and 3500 TDD bands within the same antenna footprint.

“Our latest solutions are designed in accordance with feedback from our customers. These products address a major pain point of our customers by allowing a single integrated 5G antenna to cover all sub-6GHz 5G frequency bands,” said Nokia Oceania chief technology officer Rob Joyce.

  • China 2Q23 phone shipments down despite push from shopping festival

China's "618" online shopping festival failed to shore up smartphone shipments to the country in the second quarter of 2023, with 65.7 million units shipped, meaning a fall of 2.1% year-on-year.

The technology analyst firm IDC said the decline in the second quarter this year was less than in 2022, adding that in the first six months, the Middle Kingdom saw shipments of 130.9 million units, a fall of 7.3% year-on-year.

IDC said recovery of consumer demand was sluggish and thus the discounts offered during the shopping festival did not count for much.

It said the disappointing sales results were likely to continue in the short term. The figures for China, the biggest smartphone market, were in line with those in India and the rest of the globe.

{loadposition sam08}One notable feature in the second quarter was the return of Huawei to the list of top five vendors, with the company equalling the sales of Xiaomi.

Recent reports indicate that Huawei is making a bid to return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of 2023.

IDC said Huawei's resurgence was supported by a better product launching pace as well as the favourable sales performance of its P60 series and foldable Mate X3 model.

Huawei and Apple were the only vendors with positive year-on-year growth in the top five vendors, as Apple's price discounts for its iPhone 14 series successfully stimulated demand.

“Gloomy consumer demand is not the only challenge now for the top tier vendors as Huawei made a comeback and potentially triggered more competition in the high-end segment,” said Will Wong, senior research manager for Client Devices at IDC Asia/Pacific.

“More intense rivalry is expected to be seen, especially during the product launch period and the Singles’ Day shopping festival.”
