A former Amazon senior leader says the reason you're not getting hired is because you're not being relatable in interviews
Brandon Southern is the former head of analytics at eBay, Amazon, and GameStop.
He explains that candidates often forget to be relatable during interviews.
Southern recommends that candidates try to gather as much information up-front.
A key element of getting hired is being relatable, but it's something that is frequently overlooked by candidates during the interview process.
One reason for this is because it is natural to take the job description or interviewers' questions at face-value and simply provide answers to their questions.
However, to get hired, you need to do more than have experience and check the necessary boxes. You and your experience need to be seen as relatable as possible to the job that you're applying for. The trouble is, the information that allows you to be relatable isn't always openly disclosed.
In the most common scenario, a candidate views a job posting, sees that there are several basic and preferred qualifications that the hiring manager is looking for, and determines if they meet most of those requirements. The candidate goes on to apply for the job and if they're lucky enough to get contacted by the recruiter, the candidate will have a 30-minute call with the recruiter to discuss the position at a very high-level.
During the conversation, the candidate will be pitching themselves to the recruiter, trying to get the recruiter to move the candidate along in the interview process. The recruiter will also be giving a pitch, and at the same time the recruiter will be vetting the candidate. Normally the candidate has about 5 minutes at the end of the interview to ask questions.
Unfortunately, many candidates don't have any questions, or they ask questions that won't help them during the interview process.
Lack of relatability
Frequently, candidates will ask questions about compensation, culture, remote work, or possibly why the position is open. But rarely does a candidate ask questions about the details of the work environment.

What people are saying about China's chipmaking export controls
The gallium and germanium export controls that China has recently implemented have a direct impact primarily on the field of compound semiconductors, such as GaAs substrate suppliers Sumitomo, Freiberger and AXT, as well as U.S. GaN substrate suppliers including Cree and II-VI. However, under China's export controls, the cost of gallium and germanium may increase.

Western businesses must find a way to work with China-Stellantis CEO
MILAN (Reuters) -The head of carmaker Stellantis said Beijing's decision to restrict exports of two metals widely used in semiconductors and electric vehicles should not push Western companies to reduce their exposure to China. China on Monday announced controls from Aug. 1 on its exports of some gallium and germanium products prompting fears of new disruptions to supply chains, just as automakers emerge from a multi-year chip shortage which has heavily affected global production after COVID-19 pandemic. "I am not a promoter of a total decoupling from China," Stellantis Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said, while unveiling the first of four new electric-centric vehicle platforms that will underpin all the group's future models.

Automakers' contract negotiations will decide potential EV future for idled Illinois plant
A shuttered Illinois Jeep assembly plant will be at the center of a power struggle between the United Auto Workers union and Detroit's automakers as the manufacturers double down on cutting costs to fund an accelerated transition to electric vehicles. When the Stellantis factory in the northern Illinois town of Belvidere was idled in February, it left union members in shock as they had not expected the shutdown until June. "They wanted to reduce us even more which seemed like an impossible feat," Matt Frantzen, the local union president in Belvidere, said of the decision following a prior elimination of two work shifts at the factory.

US new vehicle sales rise on strong demand, better supply
(Reuters) -New vehicle sales in the United States for top global automakers rose in the second quarter on improving supply and strong demand, signaling that rising interest rates have not yet had a meaningful impact on purchases. Vehicle production took a hit after the pandemic disrupted supply of semiconductor chips and other raw materials, hurting automakers' ability to meet the upsurge for personal transport. Companies are now rushing to make up for the lost production as supply chain snags gradually ease.

Explainer-China's rare earths dominance in focus after mineral export curbs
China said on Monday it will impose export restrictions on gallium and germanium products used in computer chips and other components to protect national security interests. The decision, widely seen as retaliation for U.S. curbs on sales of technologies to China, raised concerns that China might eventually limit exports of other materials, notably rare earths, whose production China dominates. In 2010, China restricted exports of rare earths to Japan following a territorial dispute, sending prices soaring and Japan scrambling to find alternative sources.
