The newly appointed Australian national cyber security co-ordinator says the Department of Home Affairs and legal firm HWL Ebsworth are working to address the impacts of the ransomware attack on the company.

Air Marshal Darren Goldie said in a series of tweets on Wednesday that the law firm was also working with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to meet its obligations under the Privacy Act 1988.

HWL Ebsworth was hit by the Alphv ransomware gang earlier this year. The attackers released the first lot of stolen data, including passport copies and other documents, on the dark web on 2 June.

The company took out a court injunction in a bid to prevent publication of the stolen material, though that has not prevented details of the attack being widely disseminated.

Data has been released on the dark web by the attackers, though the page devoted to the company is often inaccessible due to unknown issues.

Apart from one statement, HWL Ebsworth has not made any official comment on the attack which has affected a large number of both public and private entities.

Air Marshal Goldie said: "A number of Australian Government entities have been impacted by the HWL Ebsworth cyber incident, with sensitive personal and government information released.

"I am actively engaging with HWL Ebsworth to understand the complete picture of this incident, including how their private industry clients have been impacted, as the data analysis continues."

He said affected entities had begun notifying affected individuals about the impacts the breach had had on their information.

"The Department’s Legal Services Working Group, comprising representatives from relevant entities across the Australian Government, continues to meet regularly to work with HWL Ebsworth on addressing the impacts from the cyber incident for government entities," Air Marshal Goldie said.

"Additional co-ordination meetings are occurring to address issues for HWL Ebsworth’s broader client base.

"We will work to ensure the lessons from this incident are shared so that we can continue to collectively bolster our responses to cyber incidents."
