  • Twitter had a "lot of people doing things that didn't seem to have a lot of value," Elon Musk said.

  • Some investors said tech companies overhired and gave people unnecessary jobs as a "vanity metric."

  • Musk said that Twitter was starting to hire again after reducing its headcount to around 1,500.

Elon Musk said Twitter had "a lot of people doing things that didn't seem to have a lot of value" before he executed mass layoffs at the social-media giant.

"I think that's true probably at most Silicon Valley companies, maybe not to the degree to which it was at Twitter," Musk said while speaking virtually at the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council Summit in London on Tuesday.

"Twitter was in a situation where you'd have a meeting of 10 people and one person with an accelerator and nine with a set of brakes, so you didn't go very far," he said. Other Big Tech companies could make further job cuts without impacting productivity, Musk added.

Discourse has recently raged over the apparent "fake work" trend, with some executives and investors saying that tech companies overhired and gave people unnecessary jobs as a "vanity metric." Proponents of the theory said this was why tech giants were slashing so many jobs.

Musk told conference attendees that Twitter now had 1,500 employees, which he said was "probably a reasonable number." However, two people familiar with the company previously told Insider that the number of full-time staff was closer to 1,000.

Twitter had more than 7,500 employees at the end of 2021. Musk bought the company for $44 billion in late October 2022 and has largely depleted its workforce in what he said were necessary measures to cut costs and save the company. Musk laid off around half of its workers just a week after taking control of Twitter.

Thousands more have been fired, been laid off, or quit in the months since. The firings included some top executives and workers who criticized his leadership of the company.

Target pulls some LGBTQ+ merchandise from stores ahead of June Pride month after threats to workers

Target is removing certain items from its stores and making other changes to its LGBTQ+ merchandise nationwide ahead of Pride month, after an intense backlash from some customers including violent confrontations with its workers. Target declined to say which items it was removing but among the ones that garnered the most attention were “tuck friendly” women’s swimsuits that allow trans women who have not had gender-affirming operations to conceal their private parts. The Pride merchandise has been on sale since early May. Pride month is held in June.

Twitter crashes during Ron DeSantis US presidential run announcement

(Reuters) -Twitter crashed repeatedly on Wednesday during a highly anticipated live audio chat between Elon Musk, Twitter's owner, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, hampering the politician's announcement he is running for the Republican presidential nomination. Since Musk took over the social media platform in October, he has laid off thousands of employees including many engineers who were responsible for fixing software bugs. Current and former Twitter employees previously told Reuters the steep layoffs would put the platform at risk of crashing during times of high traffic.

Netflix begins its password sharing crackdown in the US and global markets

Netflix's crackdown on password sharing is now beginning to roll out to U.S. subscribers and other global markets, after a delayed launch. The streamer had originally planned to introduce "paid sharing" to U.S. subscribers in the first quarter of this year but pushed the start date back to the summer, after seeing cancellations in markets where it had already launched the changes. Under the new rules, U.S. subscribers will have to either kick people off their Netflix account or pay $7.99/month for an additional membership for those outside their main household.

For people who have been sharing their Netflix password with family and friends who aren’t living with you, the day of reckoning has arrived. Netflix (ticker: NFLX) announced Tuesday that the company has begun sending email messages to customers accessing their account from more than one location—and advising them that the extra users need to find another option. “A Netflix account is for use by one household,” the company said. “Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are—at home, on the go, on holiday.”
