金沙江穿行于川、藏、滇三省区之间，落差3300米，流急坎陡，江势惊险，在这样的地方修一条高速公路，在过去几乎是不可能的事。
但现在，不可能正在变成可能。
G4216线宜宾屏山新市至攀枝花段正在修建中，预计2025年通车。
因为路线在金沙江下游河谷沿线布设，这条路也被称作“沿江高速”。
沿江高速公路是目前国内单体投资最大的高速公路项目 ，交通运输部公路局工程管理处副处长宾帆曾介绍：“400多公里的总长度，总投资已经超过930亿元，平均每公里造价接近2.1亿。”
