Statcounter, a web analytics company, has released a new report that provides insights into the adoption of Windows operating systems as of March 2023. The report indicates that Windows 11 has captured 20.94% of the market. Showing an increase of 1.81% from the previous report.

The latest version of Windows is installed on approximately one in five computers. And this after a year and a half since its release. Interestingly, Windows 10 also showed a small growth of 0.17% and currently holds 73.48% of the PCs in circulation.

Low adoption rate for Windows 11: Only 1 in 5 PCs have installed the new operating system

On the other hand, Windows 7 experienced a significant decline, dropping from 9.55% to 3.72% in just one month. This is likely due to the fact that extended support from Microsoft ended in January 2023. Prompting users to purchase more modern and up to date computers.

Despite these figures, the spread of Windows 11 is not particularly impressive. Especially when compared to the adoption rate of Windows 10 during its first year and a half of release. Which was already on 33% of PCs. One of the main challenges of the latest Microsoft operating system is its minimum requirements. Which exclude many old but still functional computers. For example, if a user has a seven-generation Intel CPU, they are stuck with Windows 10. The TPM requirement is also a significant obstacle.

Microsoft is working hard to improve Windows 11 by closely listening to user feedback. And adding features that cater to gamers, such as DirectStorage. However, the general feeling is that the adoption rate of Windows 11 will continue to be slow. And will be more linked to the purchase of new PCs, rather than updating old ones.

It’s worth noting that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the PC market, with many people opting to upgrade their home office setups or purchase new computers for remote work or schooling. This may have contributed to the growth in Windows 10 adoption, as users may have chosen to stick with a familiar and reliable operating system during uncertain times.
