Microcopy and UX Writing

How does text enhance UI?

Once, we’ve noticed that those of our employees who have been working as copywriters previously are doing better with UX Researches, than those who have always had trouble with texts. Later on, we noticed, that those people who are better at writing also receive fewer fixes and better feedback on their designs. So it ended up in the small article here about the role of the microcopy in design.

While many designers focus only on the interfaces and visual elements, some understand the increasing role of the text and how it is important to use proper words in communication via the interface. Some think “Lorem Ipsum” works well, but even when our clients ask us to put placeholders on the design pages, we never do so since real texts with a thought always make the design better. They always help both the end user and client to understand the mood and the overall thought in the design easier.

There are always some clients who, instead of looking at the picture only, take text as an important part. For example, once we have been working on the web app, we received rounds of fixes just because the client didn’t like the copy and was asking to re-write it. We could’ve said, that this is not our direct duty and we are mostly responsible for the banners and overall look and feel of the page, but instead, we just made a good text for the client. And what happened then? We have delivered a design without fixes at all.

Another good example is the UX Researches part, where you need to make a thorough and deep analysis of the competitors, market and interface overall. And in case you can not make a good text and tell the client the overall logic of the analyses created, you will most likely never make a delivery without fixes. Either client will not understand the idea of the research at all or he will not agree with you.

Text is a method to make people say “yes” to your designs, thoughts and your opinion. Only if you know how to work with the text properly and how to make good and full-filled text blocks you will be able to deliver designs effectively. Only if you know which words should you use on onboarding, in the pitch deck, and even in the delivery — you will win the heart of the client. Design is a way to show your vision and text is a way to communicate it. So use words effectively, they can be powerful in fact.
