MinIO treats object storage as a first-class citizen for enhanced Kubernetes performance

To accelerate the application modernization journey, enterprises are taking the multicloud route and Kubernetes is a key facilitator.

Since multicloud enterprises running Kubernetes need object storage, high-performance object storage company MinIO Inc. comes into the picture, as evidenced by it recently hitting a billion docker downloads, according to Garima Kapoor (pictured), co-founder and chief operating officer at MinIO.

“So all the decisions that we took were just making sure that we addressed the Kubernetes and the cloud-native audiences, the first-class citizens when it comes to storage,” Kapoor said. “So I think that has been very instrumental in leading us up to the point where we have reached a billion docker downloads and we are the most loved object storage out there.”

Kapoor spoke with theCUBE industry analysts Savannah Peterson and John Furrier at the recent KubeCon + CloudNativeCon NA 2022, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the importance of Kubernetes in the application modernization journey and how MinIO provides enhanced object storage. (* Disclosure below.)

The cloud is an ideal stepping stone

In the modern enterprise world, the cloud operating model comes in handy when dealing with huge workloads. MinIO helps with cost predictability when running sustainable workloads in the cloud, according to Kapoor.

“So, firstly, I think cloud model is the way to go,” she stated. “You need to build the applications the correct way so that they can consume cloud-native infrastructure correctly. It’s all about productivity; it’s all about getting your applications to the market as fast as you can. And that is where, of course, MinIO comes into play — when you can develop your applications natively on something like MinIO.”

By using Kubernetes as a framework to deploy anything at scale, Kapoor believes this makes access control points easy for different user sets. Kubernetes also aid multitenancy through compute and storage.

“When you’re offering storage as a service, whether it is for your internal audience or to the external audience, Kubernetes becomes extremely instrumental because it makes multitenancy extremely easy,” she noted. “So, Kubernetes is definitely the way to go. I think enterprises need to just have little bit more skill set when it comes to Kubernetes.”

By taking the underlying storage complexity away for developers, MinIO propels productivity in the application ecosystem. Furthermore, users are provided with a seamless experience, according to Kapoor.

“I think what we enable is for the builders to make sure they have extremely easy, simple, high-performance software service that they can offer it to their customers, which is S3 compatible,” she pointed out. “So, now they can take their applications wherever they need to go, whether it is edge, whether it is on-prem, whether it is any of the public cloud.”
