Back the last year, Xiaomi started a new super-budget lineup of smartphones with the Redmi A1. It was launched as one of the brand’s most affordable phones. One month later, the company introduced the Redmi A1+ featuring slightly superior specifications. Most recently, the company launched the POCO C50 as a rebranded A1+ in India, but we have to agree that the device was delayed. Now, we’re seeing the first signs of a new generation. The alleged Redmi A2 series has been spotted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

We don’t know exactly when Redmi plans to launch the new super-budget handset. However, the BIS listing is a good hint of its imminent arrival. Of course, these new devices will also reach other markets where these devices make successful. The two Redmi A-series phones were spotted by tipster Mukul Sharma. One of the two devices has model number 23028RNCAH and the other has 2302RNCAI. The second phone boasts model numbers 230238RN4DH and 23028RN4DI.

Redmi A2 series – slight upgrades over the first generation?

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to determine the specs of these phones right now. We expect some improvements over the first generation, in special, over the Redmi A1+. The former introduced a fingerprint scanner and also has a variant with 3 GB of RAM. Both devices have 32 GB of Internal Storage but a micro SD card slot for further expansion. Perhaps, the new generation will raise the game with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of Internal Storage. Although 32 GB is enough to accommodate the OS and some essential apps, it’s pretty easy to fill that amount. As a result, 64 GB could easily improve things and would be a differential for Redmi in the category.

Redmi A2

The Redmi A2 will likely keep the 5,000 mAh battery, but hopefully, we’ll see an improvement in the charging speed. Something better than the 10W would be appreciated. In terms of performance, the older devices pack the aging Helio A22 SoC. It’s a Quad-Core chipset, and it would be easy for Xiaomi to pick a newer SoC with eight cores. It could even opt for an equally-older Helio G25 or Helio G35 (we need to keep the price low, right?).

Redmi A1

In terms of optics, the Redmi A2 series could easily improve things. The original phones have an 8 MP main camera and a 2 MP decorative sensor for depth sensing. The phones also bring 6.52-inch panels with HD+ resolution and a 60 Hz refresh rate.

One of the possible improvements is on the software part. The Redmi A2 series may run Android 13 Go, which has been available since October.
