SINAN ARAL: Well, I think time will tell. But I think it's an excellent bet, a billion to start, 10 billion to follow on in the investment. And as we have seen recently, it has Google shook a little bit, calling a code red, calling big names back to the company to talk about it, to think about strategy. And there's a good reason for that. ChatGPT is potentially an existential threat to Google's business because Google relies 60% of its revenue on search.
And ChatGPT offers an alternative to search, which is a one-stop question answering shop powered by AI. Microsoft has been struggling to compete on search with Bing, although they've been doing better over the years, but this could change the game of search entirely, which is core to Google's business.

India tests domestic operating system days after Google's antitrust setback
India's government on Tuesday tested locally developed mobile operating system BharOS, a move seen as challenging the dominance of Google's Android just days after the U.S. giant suffered a major antitrust setback in the country. The government endorsement of the operating system comes after Google lost its fight in India's Supreme Court to block an antitrust order that will force the company to change how it markets its Android operating system. "We have a long way to go, but if this happens, monopoly by anybody will go away," Dharmendra Pradhan, India's skill development and entrepreneurship minister, said at the BharOS testing event in New Delhi, without naming any companies.

WHO investigating links between cough syrup deaths, considers advice for parents
(Reuters) -The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating whether there is any connection between manufacturers whose contaminated cough syrups it has linked to the deaths of more than 300 children in three countries, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters. Citing “unacceptable levels” of toxins in the products, the WHO is seeking more information about the specific raw materials used by six manufacturers in India and Indonesia to produce medicines linked to the recent deaths, as well as whether the companies obtained them from some of the same suppliers, the person said. The WHO also is considering whether to advise families globally to reassess the use of cough syrups for children in general while questions over the safety of some of these products are unresolved, the person said.

Google makes changes to Android in India after antitrust setbacks
NEW DELHI (Reuters) -Google said on Wednesday it will allow device makers in India to license its individual apps for pre-installation and give an option to users to choose their default search engine, announcing sweeping changes to how it promotes its Android system. The move comes after the country's Supreme Court upheld stringent antitrust directives last week, rejecting a Google challenge against a Competition Commission of India ruling that said the company abused its market position, ordering it to change how it markets its Android system in a key growth market.
