Baidu expands driverless Robotaxi coverage in Wuhan

December 27, 2022 5:52 am

Chinese search engine and AI giant Baidu on Monday announced the expansion of its commercialized fully autonomous driverless robotaxi service in Wuhan, covering an area of 130 square kilometers (50 square miles) in the city, serving a population of 1 million.

Apollo Go, Baidu's robotaxi service, started operations in Wuhan in May this year, and began offering fully driverless self-driving commercial operations in the city in August.

As one of China's auto manufacturing hubs, Wuhan has been actively leading the way in enacting policies to support autonomous driving. Currently, the central China city has over 400 kilometers of fully enabled roads by intelligent networks.

In addition to Wuhan, Apollo Go currently provides commercialized autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Beijing, Shenzhen and Chongqing.

By the end of the third quarter of this year, the cumulative order volume of Apollo Go exceeded 1.4 million, ranking Baidu as the world's largest robotaxi service provider.

In a latest released financial report by Baidu, Apollo Go has completed more than 474,000 rides, up 311% year on year, and a 65% increase compared to last quarter.

Baidu previously announced plans to expand its self-driving mobility services to 65 cities by 2025 and 100 cities by 2030.
