China to cancel quarantine for inbound travelers from January 8

China will cancel quarantine for inbound travelers, and vows to orderly resume international travel, the National Health Commission said on late Monday.

Starting from January 8, travelers to China will not need to apply for a green health code at the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, but only need to undergo a PCR test 48 hours before departure, according to the department.

Those who test negative just need to fill in the results on the customs health declaration form. If they test positive, traveling to China will be allowed after the results turn negative.

Also, Covid-19 testing and centralized isolation for all overseas travelers entering China will be canceled starting from January 8. Those with a normal health declaration and no abnormality in routine quarantines at the customs port can be green-lighted to social mobility, according to the department.

Currently, inbound travelers still need to undergo a 8-day quarantine period - 5 days in a central facility and 3 days at their own residence.

Arrangements for foreigners to come to China, such as for work and business will be improved and the necessary visas will also be facilitated, the health authority said.

In the meantime, the authority announced that China's management of Covid-19 would be lowered from the strict Category A to the more lax Category B.

Outbound travel of Chinese citizens will also be resumed in an orderly manner, in accordance with the global epidemic situation and varied service guarantee capabilities.
