Warcraft platform to cease operations in China in January

by TechNode Feed Dec 22, 2022Dec 22, 2022

On Dec. 20, the Blizzard-owned Warcraft platform announced that it would be suspending operations in China on Jan. 24. From this Friday, the platform will close registration for new users and halt its top-up service. From Dec. 27, the platform will close its platform store and RPG map store. The announcement stated that all player data will be sealed temporarily and that Warcraft will follow the appropriate laws to ensure the protection players’ legal rights. Blizzard Entertainment and Chinese gaming giant NetEase failed to reach agreement on renewing licenses for the former’s titles in China, including World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch, StarCraft, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm. The co-developed mobile title Diablo Immortal won’t be affected by the separation. Blizzard is now working to preserve player data and talking with other potential local partners about publishing these titles in China. [Warcraft, in Chinese]
