WAD Commander

WAD CommanderVersion 1.0
Welcome

WAD Commander is a tool running in modern browsers to load and play WAD files of DOOM® and DOOM II®.

Both IWAD and PWAD files are supported. Drag and drop your WAD files to this window or open them using the "Open file(s)" button below. You can also open DeHackEd patch files and add them to the game the same way as WAD files.

If you don't have any IWAD files, you can use the IWAD of FreeDoom® (Phase 1 or Phase 2) or the shareware version of DOOM®.

Q: What is this site?

A: WAD Commander enables you to play DOOM® or DOOM II® from your browser without installing anything. It works in modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. It works on desktop and mobile too. You can add WAD Commander to your home screen on mobile and it will behave just like a native mobile app.

Q: How does it work?

A: To be able to use WAD Commander, you have to provide your own WAD file(s) from your computer or mobile device. You can browse for your WAD files from the Welcome window of WAD Commander by clicking the “Open file(s)” button or you can drag and drop your WAD file into this browser tab. After you opened a WAD file, it will be stored locally and you can use it later just by selecting it from the “Recent files” list.

Q: How can I control the game?

A: On desktop: use the default key mapping of the original game. You can use the mouse to control the game when fullscreen mode is enabled. You can also connect a game controller supported by your browser and operating system.
On mobile devices: for movement you can use touch controls on the whole screen. Use the buttons on the side of the screen to take actions. Map toggle the automap on and off. Prev and Next changes your weapon. To strafe while moving, hold Use. To open doors and use switches, double-tap Use. Press Fire... well, to fire! Hold Run for auto-running.
Press Escape to toggle the in-game menu, then swipe on the screen up or down to navigate in the menu. Swipe left or right to change value of an option in the menu. Press Enter to advance or Back to go back to the previous screen in the menu.

Q: What is a WAD file?

A: WAD is the default file format for DOOM® and DOOM II® and it stands for “Where’s all the data?”. This file includes all the maps, sprites, textures, graphics, music and sound effects of the game. IWAD (Internal WAD) is the main data file for the game and PWADs (patch WAD) can extend the original IWAD with new content, like new maps.

Q: Where can I find my WAD files?

A: You can find the files in the install directory of the game. Search for files with WAD extension. The filenames of the original retail IWADs are: doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad and plutonia.wad. You can find PWADs in different sources like Doomworld or you can create your own using an editor, like Doom Builder or Slade.

Q: What should I do, if I don’t have a WAD file?

A: You can buy the original games on Steam or GOG. You can also use the links to Freedoom or the shareware version of DOOM® from the Welcome window. Most of the PWADs doesn’t work with the shareware version of DOOM® and you need to have the retail version of the game.

Q: What games can I play using WAD Commander?

A: Currently DOOM®, DOOM II® and all their expansions are supported including all community created PWAD files which are supporting the vanilla games. Later it’s planned to support more games that are using WAD files, like Heretic® or Hexen®.

Q: I really like your work, how can I support you?

A: If you want to support the maintenance and further development of WAD Commander, please head to our Patreon page, where you can become a member of our community. Membership will grant you special benefits according to your selected tier which can include access to our Discord server.

Q: I’ve found a bug or want to give feedback, how can I contact you?

A: Please contact us on our Facebook page or via email. If you have access to our Discord server, you can also use the #bugreport or the #feedback channel.
