Apple has announced its newly upgraded 2022 iPad Pro model, and it's already available for preorder. Don't expect any big changes on the design front. Rather, Apple has given the iPad Pro updated internal specs with the addition of the M2 chip and support for Wi-Fi 6E.

The 2022 iPad Pros are the same price as the previous generation. The 11-inch 2022 iPad Pro starts at $800 and the 12.9-inch model starts at $1,100. Both models are available for preorder now and begin shipping on Wednesday, October 26.

The 2022 iPad Pro features the same M2 processor used in Mac laptops

The new iPad Pros run on Apple's M2 processor compared to the M1 processor in the 2021 iPad Pros. Apple's M2 processor is also used in Mac laptops, including the 2022 MacBook Air and 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple claims the M2 processor in the new 2022 iPad Pros offer a 15% performance bump over the previous generation. It's unlikely to be perceivable for basic apps and simpler workloads — professionals with heavy workloads are more likely to notice a difference.

With the M2 processor, the new 2022 iPad Pros are able to capture, edit, and publish videos in Apple's professional ProRes video format.

Apple Pencil detection

The M2 processor in the 2022 iPad Pros helps detect the second-generation Apple Pencil tip from 12mm above the screen to indicate where you're about to land the Pencil. Apple

The M2 processor also powers a new Apple Pencil feature that gives users a visual indication of where their Pencil would land on the screen. Compatible with the second-generation Pencil, the iPad Pro can detect the stylus up to 12mm above the screen. This could be beneficial for tasks such as photo editing or drawing, where you need to accurately put the Pencil on a specific part of the screen.

Faster Wi-Fi

Apple upgraded the 2022 iPad Pros with the latest and fastest Wi-Fi 6E standard for downloads up to 2.4 gigabits-per-second (Gbps), which is twice as fast as the 2021 iPad Pros. To make full use of Wi-Fi 6E in the new 2022 iPad Pros, you'll need Wi-Fi equipment that also supports Wi-Fi 6E.

The 2022 iPad Pros are nearly identical to the 2021 models, except for the processor, Apple Pencil hover detection, and Wi-Fi 6E support. Apple

Otherwise, just about everything else in the new 2022 iPad Pros is identical to the 2021 models. They even come in exactly the same dimensions, weight, and the same 12.9-inch and 11-inch screen sizes as the previous 2021 iPad Pros.
