Dell's hybrid work model leads to a competitive advantage, says chief HRO

The task of managing an evolving work culture often falls to human resource professionals.

The C-suite at Dell Technologies Inc. were prepared for and are now embracing the hybrid work paradigm that emerged during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve been doing hybrid before hybrid was a thing,” said Jenn Saavedra (pictured), chief human resources officer of Dell Technologies. “So, for over a decade, we’ve been doing what we called Connected Workplace. So we have a history, and we have some great learnings from that. Although things did change for the entire world, in March of 2020, we went from kind of this hybrid to everybody being remote for a while.”

Saavedra spoke with theCUBE industry analyst Dave Vellante at Dell Technologies Summit, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed Dell being a work-culture model in the post-pandemic era. (* Disclosure below.)

Fine-tuning a hybrid work-model system to perfection

COVID forced companies to mostly close their physical doors and have teams work remotely. But in the pandemic’s wake, companies can unlock new value opportunities with hybrid workforces, allowing some personnel to work remotely while still remaining productive, according to Saavedra. Dell has dug deep into the data to find a hybrid system that’s efficient and effective.

“We really just collected a lot of data and asked our team members about their experiences,” Saavedra explained. “And what we have found is you don’t have to be together in the office all the time to have a strong culture, a sense of connection, to be productive and to have a really healthy business.”

But there’s also been pushback from the corporate world, with instances where companies undercompensate remote workers, refuse to promote them, or downright mandate them to work in-office. Dell’s prioritization of  “flexibility and choice” and the non-mandatory HR style isn’t an approach that’ll work the same in certain workplaces, Saavedra explained. But, this reality doesn’t negate the value a hybrid work model provides many companies, she added.
