An adtech startup, dubbed Lunio, announced a $15 million Series A funding round on Thursday. The raise will go towards staff expansion and product development, cofounder and CEO Neil Andrew told Insider in a statement.

"Lunio plans to use the funding to further accelerate its go-to market efforts across EMEA and North America, as well as to continue innovation and investment in its ground-breaking, privacy-focused invalid user mitigation technologies," Andrew said.

Founded in 2018, the Manchester-based aims to identify fake web traffic like bots and prevent fraud for marketing campaigns. Customers using Lunio, per the funding announcement, "gain a clearer understanding of who is interacting with advertisements on key traffic acquisition channels."

In the digital advertising space, losses from fraud notched $35 billion in 2020, according to data from Statista. This results in invalid traffic, which manipulates marketing metrics. Lunio is trying to curb this so marketers can "gain more control over their campaign budgets."

"By preventing activity from bots, unwanted traffic sources, fraud and malicious publishers, marketers can save money and reinvest it back into their top-performing ad campaigns," according to a statement from the company

McDonald's, Nike, Greenpeace, eBay, and GoDaddy are some of Lunio's largest clients. Apart from Google and Warner execs, other investors in the Series A raise include venture capital fund Smedvig Capital Partner.

"Lunio is quickly becoming a leading player in the business-critical digital ad fraud space," Joe Knowles, a partner at Smedvig Capital, said in a statement.  "We were extremely impressed with the rapid growth the Lunio team has achieved and in particular the outstanding capital efficiency the business has displayed during this hyper-growth phase."
