iPhones made up more than half of all smartphones shipped in North America during the second quarter of 2022, according to a market research firm. This marks the third quarter in a row that more than 50% of the handsets shipped in the region came from Apple.

Samsung, the next nearest rival, had less than half as many shipments in Canada, Unites States and Mexico.

iPhone 13 shipments for the win

While Android captures a larger share of the world market, Apple remains on top in the United States. A whopping 88% of U.S. teens own an iPhone.

And the April-to-June period was another strong one for iPhone. “Apple grew 3% and has dominated over half the North American region for three consecutive quarters, thanks to solid iPhone 13 demand combined with a full quarter’s performance of its entry-level model, the iPhone SE (3rd Gen),” the analysts at Canalys report.

There were 18.5 million iPhones shipped in North America in Q2, up from 18 million in the same quarter a year ago. That gave Cupertino 52% of the total market.

Canalys says the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 is far and away the best-selling handset in the region during the second quarter of 2022. And all of the top five most popular models hail from Apple.

Samsung and Android come in second

Samsung was a distant second with 9 million units shipped in the second quarter of 2022, according to Canalys. That’s a 4% increase, and was enough to give the Korean company 26% of the North American market.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra was Samsung’s best performer in the region at sixth place. Shipments of the cheaper Galaxy S22 came in below the iPhone 13 mini, a model Apple reportedly will discontinue this year because of weak sales.

Other Android-makers eked out single-digit shares of the Q2 North American market. Motorola had 9% of the market, TCL had 5% and Google had 2%.
