Why does Apple cuts costs on a $1200 laptop???

That SSD speed on the 256GB is sad. We have to spend $200 more to get more speeds. Really Apple?

Houston (duh)
It could be due to supplies and availability and not cost…
But you’re probably right about cost.

Why did you start a new thread complaining about the same thing people have been talking about for two weeks now? That SSD speed on the 256GB is sad. We have to spend $200 more to get more speeds. Really Apple?

We don’t know if it’s a cost cutting measure. They may not have been able to get 128GB chips in the quantities they need.

Re-read what I said. They may not be able to get 128GB chips IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES. But really we don’t know the reason they did this so it’s silly to work up so much anger over it

Why would you cut costs and buy a $1200 laptop? That SSD speed on the 256GB is sad. We have to spend $200 more to get more speeds. Really Apple?

If you're complaining about the 256 GB single chip that I'm sure has multiple threads on it now it's likely due to supply chain. Of course Apple did cut costs on the Air. Speakers, microphone, screen... Shall I keep going? It's about making something in a price point. If they didn't cut costs it wouldn't have sold for $1200

Or maybe they know their market and are aiming the Air to general use or Office type users. I suspect most that need more speed are looking at the Pro models anyway. This is a non-issue for the vast majority of customers.

because they can cheap out AND make products more expensive ,and people will still buy and praise them
also apple engineer said that this new single nand doesnt matter as the mac still performs faster than the m1. and thanks to apple's amazing tech advancements we now have a single nand isntead of 2 ,so the new macbook air is even lighter.why don't you stop complaining about anything ?

So, if they use the same chip and supply is constrained, sellng 1 MacBook with 2 128GB parts means they can’t sell 2 iPad pros. They make 128GB chips for ipad pros

I don't know how anyone can use a 256GB SSD to begin with,
Even on a MacBook air just used for web-browsing and office work,
Even using Logic would fill the thing up...
Go at least 512, 1TB.

it's a long way from 'web-browsing and office work" to 'logic'.I don't know how anyone can use a 256GB SSD to begin with,

i do my real work (logic, final cut) on an imac. i do everything else on a 12" macbook, with a 256gb drive. six years in, and i have 151gb available. because it's moderate photo & music libraries, and then... mostly documents.
i archive much of my work. and my ex has the same macbook; she has most of her work in the cloud.
everything depends on your needs (and, i guess, budget).
anyway, a 256gb SSD M2 air still beats an intel macbook air...

Right, because the average user definitely needs to run Logic. This is easily the most ridiculous comment I’ve read all day.I don't know how anyone can use a 256GB SSD to begin with,
Even on a MacBook air just used for web-browsing and office work,
Even using Logic would fill the thing up...
Go at least 512, 1TB.
It’s an unfortunate side effect of YouTube content creator videos & usually happens when people regurgitate things they’ve heard/read without having a clue what they’re talking about. Why do people insist on being complete morons?
Maybe the whole SSD slowdown issue is way overplayed.. SSD is fast, 99% of people who use the Air will not notice this in day to day tasks. You're not buying one to run benchmarks. And for the 1% who will, are probably better served with a 14" Pro anyway.
Will see soon.

anyone using logic has a pro in my circle, unless you are ukulele player lolI don't know how anyone can use a 256GB SSD to begin with,

No one is forcing you to spend an extra $200. If you are planning to use the laptop for professional purposes then upgrade to the MacBook Pro 14”.That SSD speed on the 256GB is sad. We have to spend $200 more to get more speeds. Really Apple?

This was suggested days ago in a separate thread to all the folks who were maxing out their Airs, & most just ended up attacking the person who suggested it.No one is forcing you to spend an extra $200. If you are planning to use the laptop for professional purposes then upgrade to the MacBook Pro 14”.

The M1 Air $999 did not have this problem as it had 2 NAND chips of 128GB each. I am not a moron. Why did Apple not use a higher speed NAND then? Why do people insist on being complete morons?

guys I just want to why Apple used a slower SSD than the M1 Air. The M2 Air increased in priced from $999 to $1199 but Apple still used a cheaper ssd.
You do know that even with 1 NAND you can still get great speeds. For example WD BLACK 250GB SN750 still gets up to 3600MB/s.

But in reality, who's going to notice? If you're doing stuff that requires that much data transfer that fast, you're not using a base model MacBook Air.

you do realize that no one on this forum (or anywhere, really) can answer that? apple doesn't share it's design decisions. anyway, as eicca above noted... who's going to notice? (outside of geekbench/macrumors forum ppl)?....The M1 Air $999 did not have this problem as it had 2 NAND chips of 128GB each. I am not a moron. Why did Apple not use a higher speed NAND then?

Because they can. Those record breaking quarterly revenues gotta come from somewhere, and part of it are cost cutting and you giving them more money. That SSD speed on the 256GB is sad. We have to spend $200 more to get more speeds. Really Apple?

The supply thing has been debunked so many times on so many sites. There's no shortage on NAND chips, and prices are actually going down. It's simply Apple maximizing their profit margin. It could be due to supplies and availability and not cost…
But you’re probably right about cost.
Nothing's wrong with that, mind you, but Apple should just be honest about it and disclose the discrepancy of performance between the base model and the rest.
