Dev Spaces are fully-fledged development environments that are equipped with the runtimes and tools required for specific development scenarios. Each Dev Space is optimised for a specific development scenario. This means that it comes with a predefined set of tools that SAP believes are required for that scenario, e.g. for building SAP Fiori applications or full-stack applications with the SAP Cloud Application Programming Model (SAP CAP).

For running your enterprise applications on the SAP BTP, you can deploy and operate your applications in one of three available runtime environments:

• SAP BTP, ABAP Environment: Develop ABAP cloud apps and extensions
• SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry Runtime: Create apps based on open standards like Node.js, Python, Java, PHP, Ruby, Go, and more
• SAP BTP, Kyma Runtime: Develop and run containerized workloads on a managed Kubernetes runtime

All of these environments are available as free tiers. That simply means that you can use them free of charge until the free tier service limit is reached. Once you reach the free tier capacity limit, you will be notified and you can update to one of our commercial models.
