FCC accidentally exposes an Apple device with iOS 15.5 & 1.5GB RAM

Apple iPhone

A recent FCC document leak reveals some details of a mysterious Apple device. The accidental FCC leak shows that the Apple device runs on iOS and has a poor memory. Apple is preparing a mysterious new “network adapter” that runs iOS, new FCC filings show. The product codenamed “A2657” was simply described as “Network Adapter”. According to documents shared by the FCC, Apple sent samples of the device to the agency on January 22, 2022.

According to the documents, the adapter runs firmware “19F47,” an early build of iOS 15.5. With that in mind, let’s assume the adapter runs on Apple’s own chips, like Apple’s Studio Display. While there are no pictures of the adapter, the documents describe details of its internal hardware. It reveals that it has two Gigabit Ethernet ports, supports Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The device also includes an NFC antenna, plus a USB Type-C port. Interestingly, the FCC filing also reveals that the accessory has 32GB of internal storage and 1.5GB of RAM. A second version of the same product has a Lightning port instead of a USB Type-C port. However, it has only 1GB of RAM.

iPhone 13 is selling like crazy

According to the latest data, smartphone shipments in the North American market in the first quarter increased slightly by 4% compared with the same period last year. The main driver of growth is Apple, and the iPhone 13 series is also quite popular overseas. iPhone 13 sales gave the company 51% of the overall market, with a shipment of 19.9 million units. That’s a 45% increase from the first quarter of 2021, and the new iPhone SE has also helped capture more of the mid-range segment.

Samsung’s market share increased by one percentage point to 28% of the total market. However, the other three of the top five are probably the most interesting stories of smartphone sales in North America right now. That includes Motorola’s continued surprise comeback, and a reinvigorated Google into the top five.

The total shipments of the North American smartphone market reached 39 million units, a year-on-year increase of 3.7%. Going forward, Canalys sees supply chain issues as an ongoing issue for smartphone suppliers, but expects the North American market to prioritize and “maintain healthy supply levels.”

Due to various factors bothering around poor sales, Apple will cut the production of the iPhone SE in the second quarter by 20%. Nevertheless, the production of the iPhone 13 Pro series will increase by 10 million units. The iPhone 13 Pro will increase its production from 1 million to about 7 million. In addition, the iPhone 13 Pro Max will increase its production from 3 million to about 6 million.
