LineageOS 19 released

[Posted April 26, 2022 by corbet]
Version 19 of the Android-based LineageOS distribution has been released.
With that said, we have been working extremely hard since Android 12’s release last October to port our features to this new version of Android. Thanks to our hard work adapting to Google’s fairly large changes in Android 11, we were able to rebase our changes onto Android 12 much more efficiently. This led to a lot of time to spend on cool new features, as well as adapt our additions to Android 12’s new Material You design language!

Beyond the move to Android 12, this release includes improvements to a lot of apps, a new setup wizard, and more. Less happily, this release has had to leave a lot of older devices behind; a device must be able to run a 4.9 or newer kernel to be able to run LineageOS 19.

4.4* provided a backport, which a handful of the new roster received.
LineageOS is a project I'll always be grateful for.

I wish I'd read comments on the new "design" before upgrading, it's as if the sort of designers of high fashion and their "looks" without any concerns for practicality have got hold of things again. Invariably it takes twice as much swiping to reach settings which had reached a state of economical organization, given the larger fonts, "bubble" look, useless special effects, etc. If only downgrading was as simple as upgrading.

No doubt pushback will occur and some sort of sanity will return -- in a year or three.

Any and all design idiosyncrasies would not be so painful if not for the decade-old crusade against themes.

My primitive 2007 feature phone allowed for the recoloring of every single thing, custom backgrounds for UI elements, etc. So did (AFAIK, I never owned one) Windows Mobile devices. After that - only two of my smartphones, a Samsung and a Xiaomi, supported themes.

I wouldn't expect such functionality from Apple, since they enforce a coherent look-and-feel. I'm not counting on OEM Android either. But I find it puzzling that the flagship libre flavor of Android would follow those in only allowing a handful color variations.

Or am I not aware of something crucial?
