AMD AM4 mainboards with three digital display outputs

Suppose you want to build a low-cost triple-screen desktop workstation but you aren’t a hardcore gamer and don’t want to spend hundreds (or thousands) on a discrete GPU. Luckily, there are several mainboards with built-in video connectors that can be used with the latest generation of AMD APUs that combine an excellent CPU with a decent GPU.

For this list I’m only considering mainboards that can operate three monitors (each with distinct content aka extended desktop) via DisplayPort, HDMI or DVI. No VGA or monitor mirroring.

For budget compact builds, my pick would be the Gigabyte A520I AC since it comes with wi-fi and has plenty of expansion options including 1 M.2 SSD slot, 1 PCIe x16 slot.

For a budget mid-sized build, the Asus Pro B550M-C/CSM offers considerably more expandability with 2 M.2 SSD slots, 1 M.2 wi-fi slot, 1 PCIe x16 slot, 1 PCIe x4, and 1 legacy PCI slot.

Pair either of these boards with an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G processor with built in Radeon graphics and a dual-channel 16GB CL16 3200MHz DDR4 ram kit, and you’ve got the basics of an excellent PC.

The Thunderbolt-enabled mainboards have a ton of additional features, but they may not offer the best value for this type of build given the added cost. The less expensive Gigabyte A520M mainboards are OK for running 3x 1080p or 2x 4K60 but won’t be able to run 3x 4K60 or even 3x 1440p.

If you’re planning a build based on an AMD APU, let me know which mainboard you end up choosing and why. I’ve always found it fascinating how many different models there are and how unique everyone’s perspective is on which features are important.
