GIF是一种公用的图像文件格式标准，发明于1987年，版权归Compu Serve所有。GIF全称为Graphics Interchange Format，即图形交换格式，广泛用于互联网和其他在线服务系统中，作为一种常见的动图格式，对于不少人来说都相当熟悉了。
据The Verge报道，GIF主要发明者之一Stephen Wilhite在上周因感染新冠病毒去世了，享年74岁。在生命的最后时刻，他的家人都陪伴在身边。Stephen Wilhite的讣告页面写道：“即便他取得了那么多的成就，但仍然是一个非常谦虚、亲切和善良的人。”
Stephen Wilhite在上世纪80年代受雇于Compu Serve，而后从事于GIF格式的开发工作。Stephen Wilhite大概在2000年前后退休了，随后他把时间花在旅行、露营、以及在地下室摆弄火车模型上。
GIF长期以来还有一个争论点，就是如何正确发音，世界不同地方的人都有各种的读法。Stephen Wilhite曾在2013年接受采访的时候表示，即便是《牛津英语词典》里面收录的两种发音都是错的，正确的读法应该是“jif”。事实上，在CompuServe的图形程序CompuShow的文档里一直如此。
Stephen Wilhite的妻子Kathaleen表示，创建GIF是Stephen Wilhite最自豪的事情，当时Stephen Wilhite是在家里开发的。
