周围存在捕食者会对动物的行为产生巨大影响。根据发表在 PNAS 期刊上的一项研究，被捕猎的恐惧会影响到其繁殖。研究对象的是歌雀，研究人员认为他们发现的现象也存在于其它物种中间。当发现附近有捕食者，歌雀会停止觅食，这意味着难以给后代提供充足食物。在繁殖季节，歌雀也减少了产蛋，后代数量减少了一半，而且它们的幼鸟健康状况也比没有受到恐惧威胁的鸟的后代差。
