Facebook 致函洛杉矶警察局（LAPD），要求其停止设置虚假个人资料以对用户进行监控。此举是在《卫报》的报道之后做出的，《卫报》透露美国警察部门一直在与一家科技公司合作，分析用户数据以协助破案。Facebook明确禁止创建和使用虚假帐户。它说目的是“创造一个安全的环境，让人们可以相互信任并可以追究彼此的责任。”Facebook 副总裁兼民权副总法律顾问 Roy Austin 在一封信中介绍了 Facebook 的政策，他写道：“LAPD 的指导文件不仅将 Facebook 作为明确的例子，建议警官建立虚假社交媒体账户，文件还表明，LAPD 的政策只是允许警官为‘在线调查活动’创建虚假账户。虽然此类政策的合法性可能取决于 LAPD，但是警官在我们的服务上创建账户的时候必须遵守 Facebook 的政策。警察局应该停止在 Facebook上 所有涉及使用虚假账户、冒充他人和出于监视目收集数据的行为。”
