How to Stop iPhone Selfies From Flipping or Mirroring After You Take the Photo

Do your iPhone selfies look different after you take the photo compared to when you were in the Camera app? Here's how to fix it.

In the real world, people are used to seeing themselves in mirrors, and thus the mind is set up to prefer this version. Therefore, the real-time iPhone camera screen shows you a mirrored version of yourself (which is actually fake). But the final image in the Photos app flips back to normal (which is real).

As a result, after snapping a selfie on your iPhone, you might notice that the saved image in the Photos app isn't exactly how you saw it in the camera. And in many cases, you may even dislike the final picture.

To fix this, you can enable an option that ensures the selfies don't appear flipped and look identical to what you see in the camera when taking the picture. We'll show you how below.

How to Take a Mirrored Selfie on iPhone

Here are the steps to stop selfies from flipping, mirroring, or turning around automatically on an iPhone running iOS 14 or later:

  1. Open Settings and tap Camera.
  2. Turn on the switch for Mirror Front Camera or Mirror Front Photos.
  3. Open the Camera app and switch to the front camera to take mirrored selfies.

Please note that this setting applies to both photos and videos you take using the front camera on an iPhone XS, XR, and later. On the iPhone 6S up to iPhone X, it applies only to photos. Videos will continue to flip.

What to Do on iOS 13 and Earlier or iPhone 6 and Earlier?

Mirrored selfies are only available on iPhones running iOS 14 and later. If you have iPhone 6 or earlier, this feature isn't available as these devices are incompatible with iOS 14.

Therefore, on an old iPhone or one running iOS 13 and earlier, you'll have to flip the photos manually. You can do this using the editing tools in the built-in iOS Photos app or via third-party apps.
