MP 1,1-5,1 Mac Pro 5.1 Sapphire Pulse RX580 Black screen High Sierra
Jun 14, 2021
Hello Folks,
I had been using a Sapphire 11265-05-20G Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB GDDR5 Dual HDMI / DVI-D / Dual DP OC with Backplate (UEFI) PCI-E Graphics Card Graphic Card for a year and a half. However mid gaming the screen went black and I heard a looping noise. When I rebooted the screen would be black. I tried triple NVRAM, SMC and PRAM resets, changed the tiny battery ect.. I tried re seating the GPU and the SSD, cleaning ect. I saved my old GPU in case I needed it and when I put it in it the screens back. Is the Sapphire toast?

Sounds like the rx580 has gone, if the 5870 works.
You do have dual mini 6pin to 8pin power cable..?
Was the game particularly power hungry?

I do have the dual mini 6pin to 8pin power cable- The game was Borderlands 2. I did have the GPU on the bottom slot, could it have overheated?Sounds like the rx580 has gone, if the 5870 works.

That's the normal slot to use.
Even if it got hot, the fans should kick in.

Would it be worth running any diagnostic with the old GPU?That's the normal slot to use.

Try the tips in post #4 of this thread
The screen will be black after a period of time after mac pro 5.1 is turned on
Graphics card: RX580 8GB Video Card CPU: 2 x 2.4ghz OS: 10.15.3. There will be no signal on the screen during use, and the screen will be black. Even if it is turned on and nothing is done, it may happen at any time, but the time of occurrence is uncertain, which is very troublesome at present...

- is the GPU correctly powered? should be 2xmini 6pin to 1 8pin cable . = Done was using it from install.
- the GPU fans should spin up during boot and stop (only with high Temp they spin)= Done- does everytime.
- is the GPU card seated properly in the PCIe slot?= Done- seated and reseated several times with and without bracket
- you could test a different output of the card (HDMI / Displayport)= Don't have any HDIM or other displays only DVI.
- you could test a different PCIe slot , so instead of slot1 , test it in slot 2 tested in another slot = Tested in slot 3 or 3
- is the GPU card flashed with a different ROM ? = It's a UEFI, Sapphire I never had it flashed and booted w/o screen or chime for 1.5 yrs
EDIT: could you provide more information about the card e.g. brand, type etc ?

Does the display show when booting into Recovery (Boot holding down Cmd+R)?

It does not -Does the display show when booting into Recovery (Boot holding down Cmd+R)?
It doesn't sound good for the gpu.
I would try and use a different port (or cable) on the gpu before writing it off though.

- but now I need to try a new cable. I got one so I should be able to give it a shot. Hopefully it's not some kind of firmware issue because I have another (same)GPU on the way as it was a popular metal compatible one.
Try this.
1. Shut down & remove power supply cord.
2. Removed any OTHER PCIe cards except the RX580.
3. Remove the RX580
3. Clean the RX580's gold colored PCIe connector strip with a clean, new eraser.
Clean the GPU with canned air to remove dust
4. Remove the Dual 6pin to single 8 pin cable spray the sockets with canned air.
5. Re-instal the RX580 & reconnect the power cable.
NOTE : the RX580 can be tried in either PCIe 1 or 2 x16 PCIe slots for testing.
6. Remove ALL HDDs / SSDs EXCEPT the usual boot drive.
7. Reconnect cMP's power cord. Start the cMP whilst holding down the keys shown below
continuously until the 'Happy Mac Chime' is heard for the 4th. time.
NOTE : I stopped upgrading MacOS above Mojave 10.14.6.
If you have any MacOS higher than Mojave higher or OC installed = no guarantees.
NOTE : My MSI Armor 8gb. RX580 works 100%.
The above routine fixed small errors where Link Speed/Width were incorrect.

I put in my new Sapphire Pulse and it started right up. I guess the GPU was toast.
Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and help to try to trouble shoot this.

Maybe reduce your graphics settings for future game play, so it doesn't happen again.

I have a Sapphire Nitro+ 580RX which only works in slot 2.
If I put in slot 1, the display is blank.
Mac Pro 5,1 with the 144 BootRom
tried in Mojave and Big Sur 11.2.3.
Running OpenCore 0.71 Martin Lo package.
Screen is Apple TB display connected via Titan Ridge card in slot 4.
Any ideas why the GPU isn't recognised? If I put another card e.g. SSD on a PCIe card in Slot 1, it is recognised.

Following this as my rx580 died last sept and had to default to 7950 gpu for now. Removed my rx580 and was debating to test it but it was always in the 16x pcie slots. Will see what happens.
