Geely founder makes a foray into smartphone manufacturing

September 28, 2021 3:47 pm

According to local news outlet Changjiang Daily in Wuhan, the central city of China, Chinese automobile entrepreneur Li Shufu, the founder and chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, attended a ceremony today in Wuhan, announcing strategic cooperation between his company Hubei Xingji Technology and Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Details:

According to the company’s statement, the smartphone manufacturing project will be headquartered in the development zone of the city. By integrating global technologies and resources, the company committed to catering its products for the high-end segment in global markets.

Local officials including the mayor of Wuhan, and the relevant companies’ executives — Geely’s CEO Li Donghui and the CEO of Hubei Xingji Technology Su Jing - also attended the ceremony.

Li Shufu said that cell phones can pass on the achievements of innovation “to automobiles, and realize the close interaction with automobiles.”

Context:

Apart from the ambition of producing smartphones, Geely has also tapped into making commercial low-orbit satellites this year.

Yesterday, the first pre-production low-orbit satellite, through a facility in Taizhou, just rolled off its assembly line.

Established in 1986, Geely is privately held by Li Shufu. It sells passenger vehicles under the Geely Auto, Lotus, Lynk & Co, Proton, and Volvo brands as well as commercial-only vehicles under the London EV Company and Yuan Cheng Auto brands.

Its name means "auspicious" or "propitious" in Chinese, which was considered a low-cost, entry car brand by many fans. But in 2010, it came under the spotlight in the international arena as it acquired the Swedish passenger car maker Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Company.
