Apple Chinese suppliers suspend production due to power cuts

Some of Apple's suppliers in China have suspended production due to power cuts, local government-owned media Hongxing News reported.

Details:

Affected by factors including soaring coal prices and surge in demand, many provinces have instituted electricity curbs, especially for energy-intensive businesses, which severely disrupted the normal production of factories.

Yisheng Precision Industry, a key mechanical component supplier for Apple, said on Sunday that its factory in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province suspended production from Sunday to Friday in response to the city’s policy of suspending the supply of industrial electricity.

Apple’s printed circuit board supplier Xinxing Electronics announced that its factories in Suzhou and Kunshan need to stop production until the end of this month, and will mobilize the production capacity of other manufacturing bases to reduce the impact.

The speaker component supplier Kang Erfu also announced the suspension of production until Thursday.

Context:

The power cut has occurred in dozens of provinces including Northeast China's Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, East China's Jiangsu and South China's Guangdong.

Citing a macroeconomist who declined to be named, Global Times said that due to the lack of energy control and upgrading in the early stages, as the assessment of the central government approaches, some local governments took extreme measures, including restricting residential electricity consumption.

According to data released by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), from January to August in 2021, electricity consumption in China totaled 5.4704 trillion kilowatt-hours, up 13.8 percent year-on-year, the largest growth since 2003.
