Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 vs. Galaxy Watch 4 Classic: Which Should You Choose?

Looking to buy a new smartwatch? Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4 devices are impressive. But what's the difference between them?

Samsung launched two new smartwatches at its Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event under the Galaxy Watch 4 moniker. One is simply called the Galaxy Watch 4, whereas the other is the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

If you're in the market looking for an upgrade, you may have trouble choosing between these two smartwatches. The good news is that they're more similar than you think. Here, we'll look at all the differences between the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

1. Design

The main differentiating factor is the design, without a doubt.

The Galaxy Watch 4 has a sleeker and modern look. It looks pretty similar to the Galaxy Watch Active 2 from 2019 because Samsung intends to replace this model with the new Galaxy Watch 4 and simplify its smartwatch lineup. The Galaxy Watch 4 is made from aluminum and has a digital bezel for operation.

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, on the other hand, features a physical rotating bezel like its predecessors. It's also heavier and bulkier, but it's made from stainless steel. Samsung touts it as the more premium model and the true successor to the Galaxy Watch 3.

2. Size Differences

Both the models come in two different case sizes for a snug fit on your wrist.

The Galaxy Watch 4 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, whereas the premium Galaxy Watch 4 Classic comes in 42mm and 46mm. This is a step up from the older Galaxy Watch 3 that Samsung offered in 41mm and 45mm sizes.

Despite the overall size difference, the screen size remains the same for both the respective models. The 40mm variant of the Galaxy Watch 4 has the same screen size and resolution as the 42mm Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. That only has a slightly bigger body due to the physical rotating bezel.

3. Color Options

Samsung offers four color options for the more affordable Galaxy Watch 4. No matter what case size you go with, you'll have access to the standard black and silver versions.

If you want it in green, you'll need to buy the bigger 44mm size, while the smaller 40mm variant gets the exclusive pink gold color option.

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic may be the premium pick, but you don't get to have much fun in the color department. Samsung only offers it in black and silver for both the 42mm and 46mm variants.

4. Price

The pricing may be a huge deciding factor for many of you. If you want to keep the expenses low, the standard Galaxy Watch 4 is a great choice at $250 for the 40mm Bluetooth variant. You'll need to spend an extra $50 if you want LTE connectivity.

On the other hand, the more premium Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will set you back $350 for the 42mm Bluetooth model and an extra $50 for the LTE model.

The bigger models of the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic costs an additional $30 over the smaller options, whether you go with the Bluetooth or LTE variant.

The Differences Are Purely Cosmetic

The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic pack identical hardware (including battery size) and software under the hood.

In the end, it all comes down to the looks of the device. Some may prefer the sporty and modern design of the Galaxy Watch 4, whereas others would like the classic watch look instead. The rotating bezel is definitely a good bonus, however.

If you're upgrading, keep in mind that the Galaxy Watch 4 replaces the Galaxy Watch Active 2, whereas the Galaxy Watch Classic replaces the Galaxy Watch 3.
