How to Refund a Game Purchased on GOG

Is your latest GOG purchase thoroughly underwhelming? Good job you can get a refund, then. Here's what you need to do.

GOG is a great place to buy games because it has a healthy mix of new releases and old classics updated to run on modern machines. In an ideal world, you'll be happy with every purchase, but that might not always be the case.

GOG has a generous refund policy that means you can refund any purchase up to 30 days after purchase, no matter the reason. We're going to show you how to refund a game you've bought on GOG.

What Is GOG's Refund Policy?

GOG has a great refund policy that is better than both Steam and the Epic Games Store.

You can refund a game for any reason within 30 days of purchase, even if you've downloaded, launched, and played it. The same applies for pre-access "Games in Development."

You can cancel pre-orders before release, and GOG will grant a refund, and up to 30 days after release. Then again, it might be time to stop pre-ordering video games.

gog how would you like to receive your refund

You can request a refund on individual DLCs, providing you didn't buy them in a season pass. If you bought a season pass, and you request a refund, GOG will remove the entire pack from your account, and refund you any money you spent. If you request a refund for a base game that you've bought DLC for, you'll get a refund for the game and all DLC.

If you received the game as a gift, the purchaser will need to request the refund; the game will be pulled from your account and the gift-giver will get their money back.

Theoretically, there is no limit on how often you can request refunds. However, GOG reserve the right to refuse refunds, or only offer GOG wallet funds rather than back to the original payment method (i.e. your credit card). The company notes that "refunds are not reviews," and that if you didn't like a game you should share your opinion rather than requesting a refund.

How to Refund a Purchase on GOG

Before you request a refund, if you have technical issues with a game, your first port of call should be GOG customer service. The support team will do its best to resolve the issue for you so that you can enjoy the game. If they can't, they won't deny you a refund.

Here's how to request a refund on GOG:

gog orders history
  1. Go to GOG.com.
  2. If you're not already signed in, click Sign In on the top menu and do so.
  3. Hover over your username in the top menu and click Orders & settings.
  4. You'll be on the Orders history page, which lists every GOG purchase. Find the game you want to refund and click Ask for a refund. If you don't see this, it's been more than 30 days since purchase, the game was free, or you've already been granted a refund for it.
  5. Beneath Tell us why you want to return this game, use the dropdown to select your return reason.
  6. Select how you want your refund: GOG wallet (processed in 24 hours) or Other (the original payment method, processed in up to 30 days.)
  7. Click Submit.
  8. You'll receive an email confirming your refund request. GOG will process the request in 24 hours, plus the additional time to process the refund.

That's everything you need to know about how to request a refund on GOG. Hopefully you'll never have to, but it's easy if you do.

Even if you don't buy games on GOG, you should consider using its free GOG Galaxy launcher. It combines your games from multiple platforms, including consoles, into a single library and keeps your achievements and friends list in one place.
