The SAP Champion Spotlight Interview Series highlights key strategic topics, such as workflow, and provides insights from Champions and SAP leaders on turning ideas into innovative approaches that impact people, process, and technology.

For many organizations, digitizing workflows, managing decisions, and gaining end-to-end process visibility is essential.

With workflow management, business process experts and developers can build workflow automations, embedded in applications or as extensions across Line of Business apps, with business rules for decisions, process visibility dashboards, and flexible configuration of variants.

To learn more about the current and future state of SAP Workflow Management along with her journey as a former SAP Mentor and current SAP Champion, Susan Keohan, SAP Workflow Developer at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, caught up with Thomas Volmering, Head of Product Management & Solution Engineering for SAP Workflow Management, to share front-line experiences on the impact of defining workflows and determining clear responsibilities.

During their session they discussed:

  • The process of simplifying business logic.
  • Delivering the right tasks to the right people at the right time for process transparency.
  • Insights on how data is shepherded appropriately through the workflow as tasks are performed.
  • The change in style of work calling for a greater need for low code, no code workflow software.
  • Future SAP Workflow Management plans and the importance of customer feedback
  • Advice for next generation students and recent graduates seeking a job as part of a career journey.

As Thomas said during the session, “Digitizing the flow of work and workflows, and the related processes is at the essence of SAP. It’s in our DNA and with applications like SAP S/4HANA. We support thousands of customers [using SAP Workflow Management] in all industries across the globe.”

Susan also shared insights on how the business environment and technologies can help allocate employees and other resources more intelligently, to focus on high priority work as she explained, “Business rules management, obviously that’s a big win for the workflow developers. Instead of having to maintain custom tables and change code every time a new level of approval is needed, users can make those changes themselves, and it helps empower them to have better control the business.”

Together they touched on many key capabilities of SAP Workflow Management.
