要让汽车飞起来面临巨大的挑战，而要让电动汽车飞起来，挑战会更为艰巨，需要考虑到电池的重量以及充电的频率。滨州州立大学的 Chao-Yang Wang 和同事开发出一种原型电池，让电动空中飞车成为可能。新电池支持 80 公里的飞行，能量密度每公斤 271 瓦特时，能维持超过 2000 次充电周期，充电只需要 5 到 10 分钟。电池使用了一种自加热技术去实现快速充电而不会导致短路。研究人员计划中的下一代电池能量密度将达到每公斤 350 到 400 瓦特时，成本减少到每千瓦时 50 美元。研究报告发表在《Joule》期刊上。
