India, Mexico, Australia: The top 3 countries, consumers are interested in extended trips

Most people all over the world are eager to travel again. A new survey conducted by American Express shows the new travel mindset. India, Mexico, and Australia are the top 3 countries where consumers are interested in extended trips to experience new destinations while working remotely.

More specifically, 91% of the respondents in India, 73% of the respondents in Mexico, and 68% of the respondents in Australia answered that they are interested in extended trips to experience new destinations while working remotely. The same applies to 52% of the respondents in the United States and 51% of the respondents in the United Kingdom.

At the bottom of the list are Canada and Japan were 50% and 47% of the respondents respectively answered that they are interested in extended trips to experience new destinations while working remotely.

Nowadays, traveling has changed a lot. Also, travelers’ perspective has changed about how they see traveling. Taking this into consideration 91% of the respondents in India, 88% of the respondents in Mexico, and 79% of the respondents in Australia said that they are eager to support local communities through travel.

The same applies to 74% of the respondents in the United States, 72% of the respondents in Canada, 63% of the respondents in the United Kingdom, and 47% of the respondents in Japan. Overall, 68% of consumers agree they are trying to be more aware of sustainability-friendly travel brands to support.

Another trend that will characterize traveling in the upcoming months is that most consumers plan future travel to strengthen relationships with family and loved ones. In India for example, 86% of the respondents of the survey answered that they want to travel to visit loved ones that they couldn’t see in 2020.

The same answered 75% of the respondents in Australia. At the same time, 82% of the respondents in Mexico expressed their intention to travel in order to enjoy a romantic getaway with their spouse. The same answered 79% of the respondents in the United States and 69% of the respondents in Canada. Furthermore, 75% of the respondents in the United Kingdom and 70% of the respondents in Japan want to travel to take a vacation with their family in 2021.

Traveling seems to cover the essential needs of consumers thus they are ready to sacrifice other activities. For example, according to the survey, 64% of boomers are willing to give up a month of social media to vacation. Also, 65% of millennials are willing to do the same. Lastly, 66% of Gen Xers are willing to give up a month of social media to vacation.

The travel restrictions that were implemented globally due to the Covid-19 pandemic made people miss a lot of traveling. This is evident through the answers consumers gave to the survey. For example, 87% of respondents agree that having a trip planned in the future gives them something to look forward to. At the same time, 76% of the respondents are creating their destination wish list for future travel even though they might not be able to travel yet, while 56% of the respondents said that they miss traveling so much that they are willing to book a trip now even if they might have to cancel it in the future.

Of course, high cleanliness standards are the top priority for 81%, while 79% seek privacy. Also, 59% of the respondents answered that they want to use a travel agent to help plan and customize their next trip and 80% indicated they are willing to travel to destinations during the offseason so that it’s less crowded.

The survey was conducted by American Express in order to provide insights about consumer sentiment towards travel nearly one year after the Covid-19 pandemic began. Seven countries were included in the survey. United States, Australia, India, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
